Local rivalries renew and play again in Pierce County tonight

3 / 3

This week in Pierce County prep football is all about localism.

Red Wing crosses the big river and heads up Hwy. 63 to Ellsworth for the first time since 1973.

While the Eau Galle River Rivalry continues as Spring Valley and Elmwood/Plum City square off again at Raider Field in Elmwood.

Kick-off for both games is at 7 p.m.

Both EPC and Spring Valley go into tonight's game 1-0. EPC won a close contest over Frederic in their season opener largely through the work of Levi Wolf. The Pierce County Herald's Male Athlete of the Week threw for a touchdown, ran for a touchdown, led his team in tackles, and scored the winning touchdown on a fumble return with :33 seconds left.

"You see players have great individual games running the ball, passing the ball, have a lot of receptions or tackles," EPC head coach Jerry Hannack said. "But it's rare, very rare to see one player affect so many aspects of the game by himself. "

However, Hannack knows one player is not going to get the job done the rest of the season and certainly not against a Spring Valley team confident it has the depth to compete strongly in the Dunn-St. Croix. That depth was on display in the Cardinals season opening crushed of Unity 31-0. Young depth to as underclassmen like Logan Newton, Matt Fesenmaier and Jed Schlegel made a lot of plays for SV against the Eagles.

"We've been working  on it all week in practice," Hannack said. Our linemen have to step up and help us do better job in the red zone and not let Spring Valley run all over us."

Meanwhile, in a crowd in the thousands is expected for the Ellsworth-Red Wing at Fuller-Symes Field clash 40 years in the making. This will be the contest EHS can prove despite its short size they have the speed and strength to compete, especially against a Red Wing squad which averages nearly 300-pounds per man up front. Last week in a 33-7 win over Spooner EHS had several backs combined rush for over 300 yards and will look to split time again between them and at quarterback between Kyle Kurrelmeyer and Emery Whalen. The Panthers threw for over 100 yards, including a big 53-yard pass play from Kurrelmeyer to Jarek Fischer, one of two TDs in the game for Fischer.

This game will be the Wingers' season opener. They'r elooking to improve upon a 1-8 campaign in 2012.

Not to be forgotten on the local scene, Prescott has their home opener tonight vs. St. Croix Falls at Laney Field. The Cardinals are coming off a 22-0 shutout win over Barron while SCF lost its opener 21-8 to Osceola.
