WISCONSIN SPORTS ROUNDUP: Five former Packers have new homes
Just a day after being cut, five former Green Bay Packers have found new teams through waivers. Running back Alex Green, the Packers leading rusher last season at 3-point-4 yards per carry, is going to the New York Jets. Tight end D-J Williams has been signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars and linebacker Terrell Manning is now with the San Diego Chargers. Patrick Lewis and Dezman Moses were also picked up by Cleveland and Kansas City. Meanwhile, the Packers have begun rounding out the practice squad this season by adding five players, including seventh-round draft pick Charles Johnson.
----- Los Angeles pitchers held Milwaukee to just four hits and completed the series sweep, beating the Brewers 5-3. Brewers took a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning on a Carlos Gomez two-run homer, but everything fell apart in the seventh inning. Angels added four runs, including a two-run double and a ground-rule double. Couple transaction notes: Brewers have added a couple pitchers to the roster, picking up Michael Blazek from the Saint Louis Cardinals and recalling Donovan Hand from Triple-A Nashville. ----- Wisconsin-native Vicky Opitz helped the U-S Women’s rowing team win gold at the World Rowing Championships in South Korea over the weekend. Opitz and her team won the eights final by nearly five seconds, a dominating performance. It’s also the eighth straight year the U-S team has won the gold at worlds. On the men’s side, former Badger Ross James helped lead the Men’s eight team to bronze – behind Germany and Great Britain.
