Trading hit for hit, Ellsworth High School's football team managed to finally knock down their rivals Durand for the first time since 2007 with a 29-8 win Friday evening at Fuller-Symes Field.

Durand had scored with two seconds remaining in the first half to make the halftime score 14-8. But the late score only served to make Ellsworth mad instead of cower and in response they took the opening drive of the second half to the endzone as Dan Giese scored on a 41-yard run from scrimmage.

EHS put the game away in the fourth quarter with Brandon VanderMarliere’s 54-yard touchdown run.

Dennis Schutz also had a productive night on the ground for Ellsworth as he scored the game’s first TD on a 25-yard run and added in four extra points with two PATs and a two-point conversion. Schutz rushed for 81 yards on 10 carries while VanderMarliere had 98 yards on eight carries.

Emery Whalen scored Ellsworth's other TD on a one-yard run.

The Panthers’ defense was again solid as they held Durand to just 145 yards of total offense. Logan Kemmer led Ellsworth in tackles with 12 and had two sacks.  EHS lineman Adam Schuster finished with seven tackles.

Ellsworth is 3-0 for the first time since 1999 and plays its first road game this season next Friday at Amery.
