MINNESOTA SPORTS ROUNDUP: A mistake-filled opener dooms Vikings in Detroit

DETROIT -- Detroit quarterback Matthew Stafford threw for 357 yards and two touchdowns as the Lions topped the Vikings 34-24 in the season opener at Ford Field yesterday. Reggie Bush had 101 receiving yards and a touchdown to go with a team-high 90 yards rushing. Minnesota's Christian Ponder finished 18-of-28 for 236 yards and a TD, but threw three interceptions and had a fumble. Adrian Peterson had a 78-yard TD run on his first carry of the season, but ended with just 93 yards for Minnesota, which heads to Chicago next week. Jerome Simpson had seven catches for 140 yards in the setback.


Minnesota sophomore Rodrick Williams Jr. ran for 148 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries to lead the Golden Gophers to a 44-21 win over New Mexico State on Saturday night in Las Cruces. Quarterback Philip Nelson of Mankato threw for 127 yards with an interception and ran for 122 yards and a TD as Minnesota moved to 2-and-0 on the season. The Gophers return home to host Western Illinois this Saturday. The Leathernecks are also 2-and-0 so far this year.


 A Dassel-Cokato High School junior who suffered a head injury during a football game on Friday night is still listed in serious condition, but has been conscious and alert and talking to family members. It's the second time Luke Nelson has suffered a head injury playing football; he sat out his Freshman season because of a concussion. Doctors performed surgery to remove half of his skull, in order to relieve pressure on his brain. The physicians treating Nelson expect to know more about his prognosis after further tests today (Mon). 


Toronto's Esmil Rogers and three relievers combined on a five-hit shutout as the Blue Jays blanked the Twins 2-0 at Target Field to complete a three-game sweep. Minnesota lefty Andrew Albers tossed seven scoreless innings in a no-decision. Jared Burton fell to 2-and-9 with the loss after allowing both runs in the eighth inning. Alex Presley had two of the five hits for the Twins, who have lost four in-a-row overall and ten straight at home. The Twins play a makeup game with the Angels tonight at Target Field as they continue a ten-game homestand.


The Twins have promoted seven players from their Class AAA Rochester playoff team to the major leagues. Infielder Eduardo Escobar, outfielder Chris Parmelee, catcher Eric Fryer, and pitchers Scott Diamond, Michael Tonkin, Cole DeVries, and Shairon Martis have all be added to the big league roster. Meanwhile, Samuel Deduno and Wilkin Ramirez have been placed on the 60-day disabled list, ending their seasons.


Minnesota forward Rebekkah Brunson scored 19 points to lead the Lynx in a 75-60 win over the Storm in Seattle on Saturday. Seimone Augustus scored 14 points for Minnesota, which moved to 24-and-7 on the season. The win clinched at least a tie for the Western Conference title. Minnesota chasing a third straight WNBA finals appearance and a second league championship in three years. The two teams meet again tomorrow in Seattle.


Wrestling fans are celebrating the decision of the International Olympic Committee to keep wrestling in the Summer Games in 2020. The I-O-C had earlier announced it was dropping wrestling as an Olympic sport, which led to a protest from wrestling supporters. Those supporters mounted a campaign and filed an official appeal, which they won. Former University of Iowa wrestling coach and grappling legend Dan Gable helped spearhead the initiative and says he's very happy with the decision. 


There are a handful of prairie chicken hunting licenses available beginning today to those who were unsuccessful in the prairie chicken hunting license lottery, which ended on September 3rd. The limited number of remaining licenses are available starting at noon today on a first-come, first-serve basis. Hunters who purchase a surplus license maintain their preference points for next year's prairie chicken license lottery. The prairie chicken hunting season runs from September 28th through October 6th. Hunters are allowed to harvest two prairie chickens for the entire season. A total of 126 prairie chicken hunting licenses were awarded in the lottery last week. Five more are available today.
