Ellsworth named WSN Prep Football Team of the Week, look to keep winning streak going

Ellsworth got the votes it needed to be named Wisconsin Sports Network Prep Football Team of the Week after they crushed Durand 29-8 last week.

The Panthers will try to live up to such a designation again this week as they conduct their first road affair this evening at Amery.

In fact, the Purple will have a state ranking to rise up to as well. EHS cracked the top 10 in Division 4 at No. 6 after the big win over their Hwy. 10 East rivals.

EHS head coach Clair Austin said he hopes the Panthers can control the ball like they did in beating Durand against a Warriors squad which put up 26 points vs. a Prescott team which had not given up a single point before last week.

"Sometimes the best defense is a good offense and we look to control the ball again this week," Austin said in an interview on KCUE 105.9 FM Red Wing this morning. "Our team speed can help a lot with that. It's the most we've ever had in three seasons and the kids are almost flying to the ball and making those plays their quickness allows them to do."

Amery's near miss against PHS will certainly keep Ellsworth's attention focused on tonight's game and not netx week's potential showdown with No. 2 Somerset. In fact everyone in the MBC has to stay focused this week as the Spartans face an unbeaten Cardinal squad. Close contest or not against Amery, Prescott did get the job done to stay undefeated. Cardinal head coach Matt Smith PHS says facing the defending state champion should get his team in the right frame from the opening kick-off.

"I don't think we'll have to worry about any kind of lulls or lapses this week," Smith said. "We know we have a tough task to focus in on and hopefully we can keep that score close to the fourth quarter where we've done some of our best work this season so far."

Indeed, PHS scored twice both vs. Barron and Amery in the final 12 minutes to win both contests.

Spring Valley is focusing in on its first home-away-from hom contest against Colfax at UW-Stout's Williams Stadium this evening starting at 7 p.m. The Cardinals don't want to lose their momentum from the 34-9 thrashing they put on Elk Mound last week by stumbling against the Vikings especially with, again, another showdown game looming next week at fellow unbeaten and No. 6 ranked Mondovi.

EPC meanwhile will try to focus on getting a league win after a close loss last week in their league opener to Clear Lake. The Wolves host Shell Lake this evening in Elmwood.
