WISCONSIN SPORTS ROUND-UP: Bizarre ending a part of Badger gridders first loss

TEMPE, Ariz. - The University of Wisconsin football team dropped its first game of the season, falling to Arizona State 32-30.

The Badgers were poised to take the lead with seconds left, when quarterback Joel Stave carried the ball to the midfield 15-yard line without being hit. With seconds left and time running out, Arizona State players lay on top of the ball and referees did not reset the football. Despite the bizarre ending, running back Melvin Gordon rushed for 193 yards on 15 carries, including an 80-yard touchdown to start the second half. Stave struggled in his first road game of the season, completing 15-of-30 for 187 yards and a touchdown. Penalties hurt the Badgers: Six in total for 76 yards, compared to Arizona State’s three for 15 yards.

Green Bay Packers safety Morgan Burnett is a game-time decision for today’s game with the Washington Redskins. Despite limited practice on Friday, head coach Mike McCarthy says he is still listed as questionable and hasn’t suffered any further setbacks with an injured hamstring. If Burnett isn’t a go, Jerron McMillian and M.D. Jennings will likely play. Despite the rough start for McMillian and Jennings last Sunday, defensive coordinator Dom Capers says both safeties will be better this week.

MIlwaukee Brewers’ pitcher Johnny Hellweg struggled in five innings of work, in a 7-3 loss to Cincinnati. Hellweg (1-4) allowed eight hits and four runs – he also hit three batters. Trailing 4-0 in the fourth inning, Brewers made it interesting by scoring three runs, including a Carlos Gomez RBI-single… but it wasn’t enough. Jean Segura stole his 43rd base in the game, a National League best.

The University of Wisconsin volleyball team swept Bowling Green last night (25-20, 25-15, 25-20) and finished second at the InnTowner Invitational at the UW Fieldhouse in Madison. Freshman Haleigh Nelson led the team with four blocks, while junior Ellen Chapman finished with a match-high 13 kills. The Lady Badgers wrap up the non-conference schedule next week at the NC State Invitational. UW-Madison also topped UW-MIlwaukee 3-0 earlier in the day.
