MINNESOTA SPORTS ROUND-UP: Goldy Gopher Statue Kicks Off U-Of-M Homecoming Week

MINNEAPOLIS -  The University of Minnesota is kicked off homecoming week by unveiling a six-foot-tall bronze statue of Goldy Gopher this afternoon at Coffman Union.

The statue was designed and sculpted by U of M alumnus Nicholas Legeros and students and staff raised $95,000 for the project. Governor Dayton has proclaimed today Goldy Gopher Day and U-of-M President Eric Kaler spoke at today's ceremony. The 4-0 Golden Gopher football team takes on border rival Iowa in the annual homecoming game Saturday at TCF Stadium.  Tickets in the 50,000-seat stadium are already sold out for the contest, which will be broadcast on ABC at 2:30 p.m.

The final week of the Major League Baseball regular season is upon us and the Twins are trying to avoid another 90-loss season. They host AL Central Division-leading Detroit tonight to kick off a three-game series. Then wild-card-contender Cleveland visits Target Field for a four-game series beginning Thursday. Minnesota is 65-89 with seven games left against contending teams, so steering clear of a 90th defeat is unlikely for the Twins, who have lost four straight and nine of their last 11 contests. It's possible Detroit could clinch the division title while playing in Minnesota and Cleveland might also clinch a wild card spot while here. The Twins send Mike Pelfrey to the hill tonight to face the Tigers. Detroit counters with flame-throwing right-hander Justin Verlander.
