MINNESOTA SPORTS ROUNDUP: Wolves beat Lakers for the first time since March 2005

Minnesota's Ricky Rubio posted a triple-double with 12 points, ten rebounds and 14 assists to lead the Timberwolves to a 113-90 beat down of the Lakers in Los Angeles. Kevin Martin scored 27 points and Kevin Love added 25 points with 13 rebounds as Minnesota moved to 5-and-2 on the season. Nikola Pekovic had 14 points and ten rebounds in the victory. Steve Blake led the Lakers with 19 points and eight assists while Pau Gasol poured in 11 points and 11 boards. Los Angeles dipped to 3-and-5 with the defeat. The Minnesota win snapped a 22-game losing streak to the Lakers, dating back to March of 2005. The Wolves scored a franchise record 47 points in the first quarter last night. Minnesota plays the Clippers tonight in Los Angeles.


Vikings wide receiver Jerome Simpson is dealing with some legal issues after his arrest on suspicion of drunken driving. Simpson was arrested early Saturday morning and reportedly had blurry eyes and slurred speech. He posted bail for 12-thousand-dollars later Saturday. Simpson could face another NFL suspension as a repeat offender of the NFL substance abuse policy. He missed the first three games of last season because of a marijuana-related offense. The Vikings said that they are gathering more information and would have further comment at the appropriate time. 


The Jacksonville Jaguars are winless no more after a 29-27 victory over the Titans in Nashville. Maurice Jones-Drew and Jordan Todman ran for a touchdown each and Will Blackmon returned a fumble 21 yards for the game's decisive score late in the fourth quarter. The victory gives Gus Bradley his first win as an NFL head coach. Bradley is a native of Zumbrota.


A high school football player from Cretin-Durham Hall was killed in a one-car crash in Eagan Sunday morning. 16-year-old Max Lowell was a starting guard on the team. The junior drove off the road and hit a power pole and was thrown from the car. Eagan police and the Minnesota State Patrol continue to investigate the crash.


Golden Gopher running back David Cobb ran for 139 yards and a touchdown to lead Minnesota in a 24-10 win over Penn State Saturday at TCF Bank Stadium on Saturday. Philip Nelson threw for 186 yards and a score while adding 40 yards and a TD on the ground. The Gophers moved to 8-and-2 and are now ranked 25th in this week's national coaches poll. Minnesota is off this weekend and will host Wisconsin in two weeks.


The ninth-ranked Golden Gopher volleyball team lost to No. 11 Nebraska in five sets at the U of M Sports Pavilion yesterday The visiting Cornhuskers won the opening set, the third set, and the fifth set in the victory. Minnesota will host Ohio State and Penn State this weekend.


Minnesota's Zach Parise, Mikko Koivu and Jason Pominville all scored in the shootout to lift the Wild to a 3-2 win over the Hurricanes on Saturday in Raleigh. Pominville also scored in regulation as Minnesota recorded its fourth win in five games. The Wild host the Maple Leafs Wednesday in St. Paul.


The DNR is reminding firearms hunters that deer donated to food shelves can be processed at no cost to hunters through the venison donation program. The DNR's Leslie McInenly (mac-IN-en-lee) says a complete list of processors that take part can be found on either the Department of Ag's website or the DNR's. She says many food shelves across the state welcome venison. Processors who accept deer are paid 70 dollars to process each animal for food shelf distribution through the state's venison program.
