MINNESOTA SPORTS ROUND-UP: Wild hold off Florida rally, win 3-2

ST. PAUL ( - Charlie Coyle broke a tie in the third period and the Minnesota Wild fended off the Florida Panthers, 3-2, at Xcel Energy Center.

A 2-0 Minnesota lead evaporated in the third on goals by Tomas Kopecky and Jonathan Huberdeau, the latter coming at the 8:59 mark. Coyle, however, put the Wild back in front less than four minutes later. Mikko Koivu sent a pass from the behind the Florida net out front to Coyle and he beat Tim Thomas from just outside the crease at 11:38. Zach Parise and Jason Pominville both scored in the first period for Minnesota, which has won five straight home games. The Wild are also 9-1-1 since a shootout loss to the Panthers in Florida on Oct. 19. Koivu had two assists and Josh Harding made 22 saves. The Wild face Winnipeg Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Xcel Eenergy Center.


Wilson Chandler had 19 points, Kenneth Faried scored 16 with 10 rebounds and the Denver Nuggets held off a late-game surge to beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 117-113 on Friday night, extending their winning streak to three games. Ty Lawson added 14 points and 10 assists and Andre Miller scored 13 with a key late-game rebound for the Nuggets, who have won 12 of their last 14 home games against Minnesota. Kevin Love had 28 points and 10 rebounds and Kevin Martin scored 27 for the Timberwolves, who have lost three of their last four road games. 


The University of Minnesota men's hockey team had no problem with Minnesota State Friday evening, beating the Mavericks 4-1 at Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis. Mike and Connor Reilly both scored goals for the No. 1 ranked Golden Gophers and Justin Kloos and Seth Ambrose also scored for the U. Mike Reilly and Kloos each had an assist and Nate Condon had two assists for Minnesota. Winning goalie Adam Wilcox made 34 saves as MSU outshot the Gophers 35-30. The series concludes this evening at Mariucci Arena with the face-off at 7 p.m.
