MINNESOTA SPORTS ROUND-UP: Wild shootout winners over Winnipeg

WINNIPEG, Manitoba ( - Charlie Coyle's tally in the fourth round of the shootout sent Minnesota past Winnipeg, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at MTS Centre.

After Niklas Backstrom turned away Devin Setoguchi, Coyle snaked his way through the zone and managed to pull Ondrej Pavelec to the left post while he slid the puck inside the far pipe to end the contest. Nino Niederreiter and Zach Parise scored for the Wild, who improved to 9-1-1 in November. Backstrom stopped 37 shots and three of four in the breakaway round in relief of Josh Harding, who was a late scratch after suffering a lower-body injury in warmups. 


Aaron Brooks nailed six 3-pointers and netted 26 points as the Houston Rockets defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves, 112-101, on Saturday night. Terrence Jones tallied 18 points and 10 rebounds, Jeremy Lin poured in 19 points and Dwight Howard added 11 points, 13 boards and four blocks for the Rockets, who have won four of their last five game. Houston was without its leading scorer James Harden, who was held out of the lineup with a sore foot. He is also expected to miss Hosuton's next game at Memphis. Kevin Love had 27 points and 15 rebounds for Minnesota, which has dropped four of its last six tilts. 


While the University of Minnesota's women's hockey team's overall winning stream is over with, the No. 1 ranked Golden Gophers road winning streak is still in tact and is now at 36 straight. The Gophers downed Yale 5-1 Saturday. The U jumped ahead 3-0 after the first period and added two more goals in the second. Five different players scored goals for the Gophers (Dani Cameranesi, Hannah Brandt, Kelly Terry, Rachel Ramsey and Meghan Lorence) and Brooke Garzone finished with two assists. Winning goalie Amanda Leveille made 19 saves and assisted on one of the Gophers' goals. The U is now 14-1-0 on the season. The non-conference series concludes at noon (CST) today in New Haven, CT.
