MINNESOTA SPORTS ROUND-UP: UMD upsets No. 1 Minnesota in a rout

MINNEAPOLIS - The No. 1 ranked University of Minnesota men's hockey team was upset by in-state rival Minnesota-Duluth in  a surprising 6-2 blowout Sunday afternoon at Mariucci Arena.

UMD exploded for a 3-0 lead in the first period and after the Golden Gophers' scored early in the second to make the margin 3-1, the Bulldogs struck back for two more goals and a 5-1 advantage going into the third period.  The U pulled starting goalie Michael Shibrowski in the second period in favor of Adam Wilcox. Justin Crandall had two goals and two assists to lead the Bulldogs. Minnesota's two goals were scored by Mike Reilly and Michael Brodzinski. UMD was 4-for-7 on power playes while the U went 2-of-10. All of the goals in the second and third periods came on power plays. Minnesota is now 14-2-0 overall while UMD is 6-5-1.


The No.1 ranked University of Minnesota women's hockey team downed Yale 4-1 Sunday in New Haven, CT. The Golden Gophers scored three goals in the the first period and added their fourth in the second period. Getting those goals were Megan Wolfe, Rachel Bona, Hannah Brandt and Meghan Lorence, who also had two assists. Bona and Brandt also tallied two assists as well. Winning goalie Aamda Leveille made 17 saves as the U outshot the Bulldogs by a whopping 52-18 margin. Minnesota's road winning streak now stands at 37. 


The University of Minnesota men's basketball team is in Hawaii this week for the Maui Invitational.  They start the tournament off today at 4:30 p.m. local time by taking on #9-ranked Syracuse.  It's an opponent the Gophers haven't seen a lot of - in fact just one time in school history as they met them in the Sweet 16 of the 1990 NCAA Tournament when the Gophers got the win and advanced to their first ever Elite Eight appearance.  The Gophers are rolling having started the season 5-0 and coming off a win over Wofford this past Thursday.  Andre Hollins leads the Gophers with 18.8 points per game and 4.0 rebounds.
