WISCONSIN SPORTS ROUND-UP: Packers open playoffs vs. 49ers

GREEN BAY - Quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers will play host to the San Francisco 49ers today at Lambeau Field. The biggest story in this game will be the weather, with wind chills and the mercury well below zero.

The other story is the same old music all season long… injuries. While the offense will be bolstered with Rodgers starting (collarbone), the defense will have to play without linebacker Clay Matthews (broken thumb). Because of the cold temperatures, fans at the game will be treated to free coffee and hot chocolate at the concession stands. Packers and 49ers get underway 3:40 this afternoon.

Things have gone from bad to worse for the Milwaukee Bucks. Following last night’s 116-100 home loss to the Phoenix Suns last night, teammates Larry Sanders and Gary Neal got into a very heated and face-to-face argument in the locker room. When asked about the squabble, Sanders would not comment and added “I had a bad game.” The center scored seven points and grabbed four rebounds. He also turned the ball over three times, contributing to 25 Milwaukee turnovers… a new season-high.

Marquette University’s men’s basketball team grabbed its first Big East win of the season, defeating DePaul 66-56 at the Bradley Center yesterday afternoon. Davante Gardner led the Golden Eagles with 28 points and six rebounds. Marquette dominated the free throws, making 23 of 31. DePaul was held to just four free throw attempts. The Golden Eagles also held the Blue Demons leading scorer, Brandon Young, scoreless (he went 0 for 9).

The University of Wisconsin women’s hockey team swept a weekend series with St. Cloud State in a 4-0 win in St. Cloud, Minn. yesterday. Freshman goalie Ann-Renee Desbiens pitched her third shutout of the season. With the shutout, the Badgers now lead the nation in scoring defense, allowing just under one goal per game (.95). Badgers are back home next weekend to face fourth-ranked North Dakota in a two-game series.

The No. 13 ranked University of Wisconsin men’s hockey team salvaged a home series split with Alaska-Anchorage, beating the Seawolves 4-3 in front of over 10,000 fans at the Kohl Center.  The Badgers, 11-6-1 overall, led UAA 2-1 after the first period but the Seawolves’s Matt Bailey scored twice in the second period to put his team in front 3-2. UW responded with a goal from Eddie Wittchow to tie the score at 3-3 after two periods and then the game-winning goal by Jake McCabe. Winning goalie Joel Rumpel made 26 saves as UW won despite being outshot 29-24. This was Wisconsin’s final non-conference series of the regular season. They play the rest of their Big Ten schedule until the end starting with Michigan next weekend in Madison. UAA is 9-9-2 overall.
