MINNESOTA SPORTS ROUND-UP: Love to start in NBA All-Star Game

MINNEAPOLIS  --  Minnesota Timberwolves forward Kevin Love will start for the Western Conference in the NBA All-Star Game next month in New Orleans on the 16th.

This will be his third All-Star Game appearance and Love becomes the first player from Minnesota to be named a starter since 2007. Love says he was in shock when Wolves president Flip Saunders told him was he was voted in as a starter.  He also plans to take part in the NBA Three-Point Shootout which he won two years ago.

Does the Twin Cities have a "leg up" on New Orleans and Indianapolis for the 2018 Super Bowl because of the Vikings' new stadium?  Team VP Lester Bagley told lawmakers Thursday, "absolutely".  He says the "NFL has evolved the way they award Super Bowls, and... now it alternates between warm-weather destinations -- which we are not -- and with markets have resolved stadium issues."  Bagley says NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell knows what the state and the legislature did to pass a bill and get the stadium on-line.  He says the Vikings' bid is due April 1st and they're working hard on it.

The Minnesota Twins say tickets have sold out for Saturday's Twins Fest at Target Field.  But there are tickets still available for  Sunday.  Spokesman Chris Isles says, besides the new venue of Target Field, there are a lot of other new features for this year's event, like self-guided tours through the home club house.  About 75 current and former Twins players are scheduled to be at Twins Fest over the weekend.

Up to 12,000 anglers are expected at the 24th annual Brainerd Jaycees $150,000 dollar Ice Fishing Extravaganza Saturday on Gull Lake.  It's billed as the largest charitable ice fishing contest in the world.  Those who catch the biggest fish are eligible for prizes including a new pickup truck, a four-wheeler or and Ice Castle fish house.  Event co-chair Sara Stenerson says there are some new features this year like a jumbotron screen with the leader board and tent city now located at center ice.  There is also a side contest where for five-dollars anglers have a chance to win a $9,000 ice fishing prize package.
