WISCONSIN SPORTS ROUND-UP: Another big game for Kaminsky means another win for Badgers

IOWA CITY, Iowa - Frank Kaminsky led all Badgers with 21 points in a University of Wisconsin men’s basketball 79-74 win over 15th-ranked Iowa yesterday afternoon at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Sam Dekker recorded another double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds in the win. The Badgers complete the season sweep of the Hawkeyes and are now a half-game ahead of Iowa in the Big Ten standings, currently in third-place at 9-5, 22-5 overall. It was UW’s fifth straight win. The Badgers host Indiana on Tuesday.


It’s the “Great American Race", synonymous with the end of winter and a fresh start in spring. Following a disappointing finish behind Sprint Cup winner Jimmie Johnson, Wisconsin native Matt Kenseth is looking for a great start to the 2014 race season in today’s Daytona 500. Kenseth will start in the 3rd position, behind Martin Truex Jr. and Austin Dillon. Other notable Wisconsinites in today’s race include Paul Menard in the 10th spot and Danica Patrick in 27th. The race gets underway at noon.


The University of Wisconsin men’s hockey team completed the weekend sweep of Michigan State with a 2-0 win over the Spartans Saturday afternoon in front of a sold out Kohl Center. UW’s goals came from Joseph Lebate in the first period and Michael Mersch in the second. Winning goalie Joel Rumpel made 31 saves. Both UW goals came on power plays. The win capped off a school record 17-2-1 record at home this season for the No. 8 ranked Badgers. UW’s record is 19-9-1 overall and 10-5-1 in the Big Ten. Wisconsin is just a point behind Minnesota in the league standings although UW will be off next weekend while Minnesota hosts Penn State.


The No. 2 ranked University of Wisconsin women’s hockey team competed its regular season with a sweep of Minnesota State after beating the Mavericks 3-1 Saturday in Mankato, Minn. UW broke a 1-1 tie in the third with a pair of goals from Sydney McKibbon and Erika Sowchuk. UW goalie Ann-Rene Desbiens made 27 saves. Also scoring for UW was Courtney Burke, who also had an assist. The Badgers complete the regular season 25-5-2 overall and 21-5-2 in the WCHA, good for second place behind No. 1 ranked Minnesota. Next weekend is the first round of the WCHA playoffs and Wisconsin will host Minnesota State, 12-21-1 overall and 7-20-1 in the WCHA, in a 2-7 match-up.


The University of Wisconsin finished sixth at the Big Ten women’s swim meet in Minneapolis yesterday. Junior Ivy Martin commanded the Big Ten title in the 100-yard freestyle, shattering the conference record. She also helped the Lady Badgers to a conference title in the 400-yard freestyle relay for just the fourth time in the meet’s history. Because of her record-setting performance in the individual freestyle race, Martin earned an automatic bid to this year’s NCAA championships in March. Martin was also named the meet’s MVP and made first team All-Big Ten. UW swimmers Chase Kinney, Rebecka Palm, Emma Paulson and Aja Van Hout, were all named to first team All-Big Ten as well Making second team All-Big Ten were Anna Meinholz and Annie Tamblyn. Minnesota won its fourth Big Ten title in a row amassing 760 points and Indiana finished second.


The trio of Paul George, David West and Lance Stephenson combined for 86 of Indiana's 110 points as the Pacers topped the Milwaukee Bucks 110-100 on Saturday at the Bradley Center.  George poured in a game-high 32 points after connecting on 5-of-7 shots from behind the arc, West tallied 30 points on 11-of-16 shooting and Stephenson flirted with a triple-double, contributing 24 points, nine rebounds and eight assists.  Brandon Knight dropped 30 points with eight assists in Milwaukee's sixth loss in its last seven games. Nine different Bucks netted at least six points, including all five reserves that took the court.


Davante Gardner finished with 22 points to lead the Marquette Golden Eagles to a 96-94 overtime win over the DePaul Blue Demons in a Big East Conference thriller at Allstate Arena in Rosemount, Ill. Todd Mayo added 19 points for Marquette (16-11, 8-6 Big East), which also received 18 points and nine rebounds courtesy of Jamil Wilson. Chris Otule contributed 12 points as the Golden Eagles notched their fourth win in five outings. The Blue Demons (10-18, 2-13) came up short despite a terrific showing by Brandon Young, who tallied a season-high 29 points, six assists and five rebounds. Billy Garrett also had a solid showing with a career-high 26 points, while Durrell McDonald netted 13 points in 24 minutes off the bench. The Golden Eagles knocked down 55.6 percent of their field goal attempts including 4-of-5 from behind the 3-point line in the opening period. DePaul went into the intermission trailing, 44-41, after it shot 45.2 percent from the floor and committed seven turnovers in the first half.
