WISCONSIN SPORTS ROUND-UP: UWM tops UWGB in Horizon League semifinals

GREEN BAY – UW-Milwaukee advanced to the Horizon League finals last night, knocking off top-seeded Green Bay in a 73-66 overtime thriller.

Jordan Aaron led the Panthers with 28 points, while Matt Tiby recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Green Bay’s Greg Mays scored 17 point and nine rebounds in the loss. The Panthers will face third-seeded Wright State for the league title and an automatic NCAA tournament bid on Tuesday.

Cornerback Sam Shields has re-signed with the Green Bay Packers. Shields and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, announced an agreement was reached via Twitter last night. The deal is a reported four-year, $39-million contract that includes a 12-and-a-half million dollar signing bonus. The former undrafted free agent proved to be an important cog to the Packers defense last season, recording 61 tackles and four interceptions.

The Milwaukee Bucks were without guard O.J. Mayo in last night’s 114-107 loss to Washington. Mayo was suspended for one game following Friday night’s ejection for punching New Orleans’ center Greg Stiemsma. Brandon Knight led all players with 34 points. With the loss, Milwaukee becomes the first team this season to reach 50 losses.

The University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team will face a resurgent Nebraska basketball team in Lincoln today. The Badgers will face a Husker squad that is on the bubble for its first NCAA tournament berth since 1998. The Huskers have lost only one game this season at their new arena, while the Badgers have an 11-2 record on the road. Tip-off is set for 6:30 tonight. An estimated 16,000 persons will attend tonight’s game, the largest basketball crowd in school history.

University of Wisconsin wrestler Tyler Graff will wrestle for a Big Ten title this afternoon at 133 pounds at the conference meet in Madison. Graf won his semifinal match last evening over Minnesota’s David Thorn by 9-4 decision. Wisconsin is in seventh place in the conference meet with 58 points but has already qualified seven wrestlers for the NCAA National Meet and could qualify two more today. UW’s Isaac Jordan took a bitter 4-3 overtime defeat in the semifinals at 157 to Iowa’s Derek St. John, who Jordan beat in the dual meet between the two teams.  Ryan Taylor also lost his semifinal match at 126 to Penn State’s Nico Megaludis 4-3. Penn State leads Iowa by a single point. 122-121 going into Sunday’s finals. The meet at the Kohl Center begins at 11 a.m. and the finals are at 1 p.m.

The University of Wisconsin men’s hockey team won in overtime 3-2 over Penn State Saturday in State College, Penn. Mark Zengerle scored the game winning goal at the 4:39 mark of OT. Keegan Meuer and Nic Kerdelis also scored for UW to put the Badgers up 2-1 before the Nittany Lions’ Kenny Brooks scored in the third period to tie the game. Joel Rumpel made 41 saves in goal for No. 5 ranked Wisconsin, which improved to 21-9-2 overall and 12-5-1 in the Big Ten. Wisconsin has now moved up in the Pairwise rankings to earn a No. 1 seed for the NCAA Tournament if they continue to win and can still earn a Big Ten title if they sweep Michigan State next weekend in East Lansing and Minnesota is swept at Michigan.

Robinzon Diaz hit an RBI single to cap a two-run rally in the ninth inning that lifted the Milwaukee Brewers to a 7-6 win over the Kansas City Royals in spring training on Saturday.  Jeff Bianchi also had an RBI single in the ninth inning and Aramis Ramirez had a three-run double in his first spring training at-bat to highlight a four-run first.  The first-inning runs came against Royals starter John Lamb, who got just two outs before he was pulled after giving up four hits and two walks. Milwaukee starter Marco Estrada went 3 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with one strikeout and no walks.

D'Angelo Harrison, Rysheed Jordan and JaKarr Sampson all scored 20 points, as the St. John's Red Storm claimed a 91-90 double-overtime victory against the Marquette Golden Eagles in the Big East Conference regular-season finale for both teams at the Bradley Center. Phil Greene IV added 11 points to help the Red Storm (20-11, 10-8 Big East) sweep the regular-season series and clinch the fifth seed in next week's Big East Conference Tournament. Davante Gardner had 21 points and Todd Mayo scored 20 off the bench for the Golden Eagles (17-14, 9-9), who closed out their schedule with three straight losses. Jamil Wilson was next in line with 15 points, followed by Jake Thomas with 14, and Deonte Burton with 10.
