UNIONDALE, NY -- Minnesota's Matt Moulson recorded two goals and an assist as the Wild blanked the New York Islanders 6-0 at Nassau Coliseum last night. Ilya Bryzgalov, making his second start since being acquired by Minnesota from Edmonton, made 36 saves for his second shutout of the season and 32nd of his career. Justin Fontaine added a goal and a helper, while Mikko Koivu had three assists for the Wild, who had lost five-of-six coming in. The three assists made Koivu the franchise's all-time leader in points. Jared Spurgeon, Mikael Granlund and Clayton Stoner also lit the lamp in the victory. Anders Nilsson gave up all six goals on 22 shots for the Isles, who have lost four of their last six. Minnesota is at New Jersey tomorrow to wrap up the three-game road trip to the northeast.


Golden Gopher hockey player Brady Skjei of Lakeville has been named the Big Ten Conference Third Star of the Week. Skjei helped Minnesota to a Friday night win over Michigan that clinched the first-ever Big Ten championship for the Golden Gophers. For the weekend, he finished with three goals, including two in Saturday's loss to the Wolverines.


Golden Gopher senior guard Maverick Ahanmisi scored a career best 21 points as the Minnesota Golden Gophers defeated the High Point Panthers 88-81 in the opening round of the National Invitational Tournament at Williams Arena last night. Eagan native Joey King had 14 points and seven rebounds for the top-seeded Golden Gophers, who pushed their record to 21-and-13 on the year Andre Hollins and Maurice Walker each chipped in with 13 points. Minnesota will now host St. Mary's on Sunday at Williams Arena in the second round of the tourney. St. Mary's rallied past Utah last night 70-58. Gopher guard DeAndre Mathieu did not play for most of the second half with a hip injury, but he says he expects to play in the next round this weekend.

The Golden Gopher women's basketball will host a first-round Women's National Invitational Tournament game tonight at Williams Arena against UW-Green Bay. Minnesota finished the season with a 20-and-12 record this season, including a win over Wisconsin and a loss to Nebraska in the Big Ten tournament two weeks ago. UW-Green Bay finished the season 22-and-9. Gametime for this evening's contest is 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale now.


The 2014 Minnesota Girl's High School State Basketball Tournament got underway yesterday and will run through Saturday at various locations in Minneapolis. Two teams are back to defend their 2013 championships. Last year's Class A title team Minneota returns and is the No. 1 seed in the division. And, New Richland-HEG returns to defend its Class 2-A championship. Class 3-A Park Center of Brooklyn Park is making its first-ever state tourney appearance in girl's basketball. Twins pitcher Vance Worley allowed seven runs on 11 hits over just more than two innings of work and Tampa Bay beat Minnesota 11-3 in a spring training game yesterday. Minnesota faces St. Louis in a Grapefruit League game today at noon in Jupiter. The Cardinals are slated to start Carlos Martinez.


The University of Minnesota baseball team beat Saint Mary's 15-11 in a high-scoring ballgame yesterday in California. Gopher infielder Michael Handel of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin drove home four runs in the win. The Golden Gophers are now 10-and-6 on the season, while Saint Mary's dips to 8-and-11. The same two teams play today at 5 p.m.
