UWGB women's hoops at Minnesota for WNIT contest tonight
MINNEAPOLIS - The UW-Green Bay women will open their WNIT tournament run tonight at Minnesota. The game is at Williams Arena and tip-off is at 7 p.m.
The Phoenix are 22-9, and they would have been in the NCAA's had they not lost to Wright State by 19 points in last Sunday's Horizon League Tournament final. Still, Green Bay is in its 17th straight post-season tournament. They're looking for their first victory in the WNIT, after losing in 2008, 2006, and 2001.
Tonight, they'll play a Minnesota team that's 20-12. Gophers' junior guard Rachel Banham needs 26 points to break her school's single-season scoring record of 708, set by Laura Coenen in 1985. Banham is averaging 22 points a game this season. Kaili Lukan leads Green Bay in scoring with just over 11 per night.
Tonight's winner will play either Southern Methodist or Texas Southern in the tournament's second round. Those two teams will square off tomorrow.
