MINNESOTA SPORTS ROUNDUP: Twins beat Cleveland in a slugfest to take series

CLEVELAND, OH -- Minnesota designated hitter Chris Colabello knocked in four runs as the Twins outslugged the Indians 10-7 in the rubber match of a three-game series at Progressive Field.  Trevor Plouffe (PLOOF) drove in a run and scored twice, and Joe Mauer finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored as Minnesota evened its record at 3-and-3.  Anthony Swarzak picked up the win in relief.  Glen Perkins pitched a perfect ninth for his second save.  Yan Gomes hit a two-run homer and Jason Kipnis knocked in three runs for the Indians, who fell to 3-and-3.  Blake Wood suffered the loss.  The Twins entertain Oakland today in Minneapolis for the home opener at Target Field.


The Minnesota Twins home opener this afternoon will feature a special "Stand Up to Cancer"(SU2C) theme.  As a show of support for Twins G-M Terry Ryan and others impacted by cancer, players from the Twins and A's are wearing SU2C patches.  Team spokesman Kevin Smith says there will also be a tribute to honor those battling cancer during the game.  Smith says this is the first time Major League Baseball has allowed a team to do this in the regular season  "Take Me out to the Ballgame" will be performed in the 7th inning by Hope Kids, an organization that provides activities for children battling cancer. 


Oakland's Brandon Moss clubbed a three-run homer and Yoenis Cespedes added a solo shot as the A's doubled up the Mariners 6-3 yesterday.  Josh Donaldson and Jed Lowrie both plated a run and scored for the A's, who took two-of-three in the rain-shortened series.  Sonny Gray gave up three runs, but just one earned, in six innings for his first win.  Jim Johnson closed it out for his first save.  Oakland comes to Minnesota with a 3-and-3 record.


Future Hall of Famer Derek Jeter is now eighth on baseball's all-time hit list.  The New York Yankee captain went 2-for-5 to pass Hall of Famer Paul Molitor with 3,320 career hits.  Molitor is a St. Paul native and a current coach for the Twins. Jeter is now 99 hits behind Boston Red Sox Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski, who is seventh with 3,419 hits.  Jeter and the Yankees are slated to visit Target Field in early July.  This is Jeter's final season.


The University of Minnesota baseball team beat Michigan 3-1 yesterday to win the weekend series two-games-to-one.  The Gophers are now 17-and-10 on the season and 5-and-4 in the Big Ten.  The Gophers host South Dakota State on Wednesday before returning to conference play with a home set against Nebraska, beginning on Friday.


The 14th-ranked Golden Gopher softball team split a pair of games with rival Wisconsin yesterday in Minneapolis.  The Badgers took the opener 2-1, scoring a pair of unearned runs to notch the win.  Minnesota rebounded with a 3-0 victory in the nightcap.  The Golden Gophers are now 28-and-5 on the season and 6-and-2 in the Big Ten.  The Gophers are at Iowa tomorrow for a Big Ten doubleheader.


The Minnesota Wild are north of the border to face the Jets tonight in Winnipeg.  Minnesota has won three-of-four following Saturday's 4-0 home victory over Pittsburgh.  The Wild remain in seventh place in the Western Conference with 92 points.  The Jets are out of the playoff picture with 80 points.  Tonight's game faces off at 7 p.m.


Minnesota Wild fans hoping to see their team in the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs can purchase postseason ticket strips beginning today.  Wild playoff ticket strips include a seat at each potential home game in the first two rounds of the postseason.  Fans buying the strips will have the option of paying for potential round three and round four home games if the team qualifies for each respective round.  Single game playoff tickets will be on sale at a later date, pending availability.  Ticket strips can be purchased starting today at 10 a.m. at the team's Webpage, which is


A Minnesota Timberwolves player has been arrested for a second time in under a week.  26-year-old Dante Cunningham was arrested by Medina Police on suspicion of making terrorist threats.  While police have not offered any further details, the Timberwolves released a statement saying the situation is "very fluid"and the team does not condone the behavior described in the accusations. They issued a very similar statement last Thursday, after Cunningham was arrested and charged with domestic assault.


The Minnesota Timberwolves open up a three-game homestand tomorrow night against the San Antonio Spurs at the Target Center.  This is the make-up game for the postponed game back in December in Mexico City. Minnesota will also host Chicago and Houston this week.  The T'wolves had their two-game winning streak snapped with a 100-92 setback in Orlando on Saturday.  They are now 38-and-38 on the season.
