WISCONSIN SPORTS ROUND-UP: State high school baseball tourney underway

APPLETON - Defending champion Sun Prairie will play Janesville Parker in tonight's semifinals at the boys' state high school spring baseball tournament.

Both teams won their quarterfinal contests at Fox Cities Stadium near Appleton.  Parker advanced early this afternoon with a 4-3 victory over Bay Port.  That was after Sun Prairie eliminated Stevens Point this morning, 5-3.  Janesville Parker overcame a two-run deficit by scoring three times in the sixth inning.  Pinch-hitter Brock Welch hit a two-run single which gave Parker the lead for good.  Troy Albrecht and Joey Maier had two hits apiece for Bay Port, which ended its season at 22-7.  Janesville Parker improved to 25-5, and will face a Sun Prairie team tonight that's 26-5.  In this afternoon's other quarter-finals, Middleton is taking on Wilmot.  And Kimberly was to face Hartford.  Those two winners will play each other in tonight's other semifinal.

Milwaukee Brewers' starter Kyle Lohse will try to even his career record at Arizona tonight, when the Crew takes on the Diamondbacks in Phoenix.  The right-hander Lohse is 1-2 in seven career starts at Chase Field.  He last pitched there in mid-July of last year, when he gave up five runs in six-and-a-third innings of a one-run loss to the D-Backs.  Lohse is 7-2 overall this season, with an ERA of three.  He's coming off a solid outing in New York last Thursday, when he gave up one unearned run in eight innings in a no-decision against the Mets.  Left-hander Wade Miley starts for Arizona tonight.  He's 3-6 with a 4.71 ERA.  In his last start, Miley gave up four runs in five innings in a no-decision at Houston.  The Arizona offense has not helped Miley.  He's only had eleven runs of support while losing five-of-his-last-six starts.

In the Northwoods League, the Lakeshore Chinooks have regained sole possession of first in the South Division with a double-header victory over the Madison Mallards.  The Mallards were tied for the lead going in -- but they dropped all the way to fourth place after being swept.  They're now two games back, while La Crosse and Wisconsin are just one game off the pace.  Lakeshore is scheduled to play at Kenosha tonight, weather permitting.  Rain is in the forecast throughout Wisconsin, and Kenosha was washed out at Mankato last night.  Madison opens a home series against Battle Creek.  The La Crosse Loggers host Alexandria, after a 4-2 Loggers' victory over Wisconsin Rapids.  Rapids plays at Kalamazoo, which lost to Wisconsin 8-1 last evening.  Wisconsin is set to take on the Bullfrogs in Green Bay.  The 'Frogs topped Battle Creek 6-5 in 13 innings last night.  Eau Claire will host Waterloo, after getting in just one-inning plus against Duluth.  That game was suspended with Eau Claire leading 4-2.

Former UW-Green Bay center Alec Brown is getting pre-draft auditions from eleven NBA teams.  The 7-1 Brown held a workout today on the Green Bay campus.  He then took off for Salt Lake City, where the Utah Jazz plan to get a good look at him on Thursday.  The draft is a week from Thursday night.
