BOSTON --  Former Twin David Ortiz and Boston teammate Mike Napoli hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Red Sox rallied for a 2-1 win over the Twins at Fenway Park yesterday.  The two blasts gave Boston a sweep of the three-game set, despite only scoring five runs total in the three contests.  Chris Parmelee's solo homer in the top of the inning had given Minnesota a 1-0 lead.  Koji Uehara gave up Parmelee's homer but got credit for the win.  John Lackey struck out nine while pitching nine innings of three-hit ball.  Casey Fien gave up both homers in the 10th to take the loss as the Twins were swept in the three-game series.  Kyle Gibson fanned eight over seven innings of one-hit ball in a no-decision.  Minnesota welcomes the Chicago White Sox to Minneapolis tonight for game one of a four-game set.


Phoenix center Brittany Griner racked up 27 points and 18 rebounds as the Mercury cruised past the Minnesota Lynx 92-79 last night in Phoenix.  Maya Moore scored a game-high 36 points for Minnesota, which fell to 9-and-4.  Lindsay Whalen of Hutchinson added 22 points in defeat.  The Lynx host the Washington Mystics tomorrow.


Today is the final day of mandatory minicamp for the Minnesota Vikings at Winter Park.  This will be the final workout for the team prior to next month's training camp in Mankato.  Defensive end Brian Robison says he wants to build on what he did last year.  He'd like to get double digit sack numbers and he thinks he can.  He says he missed too many sack opportunities last season and he plans to make the tackles when they are available this coming fall.


The University of Minnesota has begun selling two-game football ticket packages for the upcoming season.  Fans can purchase one ticket to a Big Ten game and will then receive a ticket to a non-conference game, as well.  The two-game packages start at 60-dollars.  For more information, fans can log on to the Gopher sports Webpage.


Two University of Minnesota coaches and college rowers are credited with saving a woman from the Mississippi River in Minneapolis yesterday morning.  U-of-M head rowing coach Wendy Davis says the woman looked like she was just standing waist deep in the water and they almost passed her by -- but when they noticed she was standing in the trees, they went over and asked if she needed help.  Davis says rowers Emily Stock and Emily Johansen threw the victim a life jacket and pulled her into the boat.  The woman reportedly fell into the water Tuesday night near the U of M's Weisman Museum.  She suffered a broken leg and rib injuries. 


 The 2014 preseason schedule for the NHL Minnesota Wild has been set  Minnesota will six exhibition games, including three at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.  Here is the preseason schedule for the Wild:

Legendary Jack Nicklaus will headline a group of well-known golfers who will take part in special team golfing competition in Blaine during the 3-M Championships in August.  Nicklaus, along with Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Lee Trevino, Johnny Miller, Dave Stockton, Nancy Lopez and Annika Sorenstam, will compete in a team-style competition on Saturday, August 2nd.  The "Greats of Golf" competition will tee off after the regular field tees it up on that day.  The 3-M Championships PGA Champions Tour event begins August 1st and concludes August 3rd at the TPC Twin Cities.


There will be a new champion at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.  Spain was eliminated in group play on Wednesday after losing to Chile 2-0 in Group B.  Also in Group B, the Netherlands ousted Australia 3-2.  Spain defeated the Dutch 1-0 in the final game four years ago in South Africa.  Both victors are heading to the knockout round.  Croatia dropped Cameroon 4-0 in Group A action.  Thursday features three more games.  In Group C, Colombia takes on Ivory Coast, and Japan plays Greece.  The lone Group D match is Uruguay against England.  The United States plays Portugal on Sunday.


The San Antonio Spurs celebrated their NBA championship with a parade on the San Antonio River yesterday.  Players rode barges down the River Center extension.  After the parade, the team and fans headed to the Alamodome for a special ceremony.  The Spurs clinched their fifth NBA title on Sunday, beating the two-time defending champion Miami Heat in five games.


Michael Phelps has doubled his workload for his next comeback meet.  The 22-time Olympic medalist has entered four events for the June 19th-through-22nd Grand Prix meet in Santa Clara, double what he swam at two previous meets since coming out of retirement.  He has dramatically increased his workload for the next stage of his comeback to competitive swimming.  


The best female golfers in the world will invade Pinehurst this week for the U.S. Women's Open.  This is the first time the USGA has held the men's and women's opens in consecutive weeks on the same golf course.  All of the top names are in the field this week.  


 The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is off to wine country for Sunday's Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway in California.  Practice will be held tomorrow with qualifying set for Saturday.
