WISCONSIN SPORTS ROUND-UP: Packers get first preseason win 21-7 over Rams

ST. LOUIS - The quarterbacks seemed to be in mid-season form for both teams as Green Bay took a 21-7 preseason game at St. Louis.

The Rams Sam Bradford was coming back from a series knee injury suffered last season, but he connected on 9-of-12 passes for a touchdown.  Aaron Rodgers was even more impressive for the Packers, hitting 11-of-13 for a score.  The Rams’ rookie defensive end Michael Sam dropped Matt Flynn in the backfield for his first sack.  Eddie Lacey carried the ball five times for 25 yards in Green Bay’s 12-play, 86-yard drive to start the game.  Scott Tolzien completed 10-of-15 passes for 107 yards and Flynn threw a 34-yard TD pass to rookie Jeff Janis.

Yovani Gallardo outpitched one of the two best pitchers in baseball, leading the Milwaukee Brewers to a 3-2 win in Los Angeles Saturday night.  Gallardo went eight innings, allowing just six hits and a run, with three strikeouts and a single walk.  He improved his record to 8-6 with the decision over Cy Young Award candidate Clayton Kershaw.  Francisco Rodriguez surrendered a ninth-inning home run to Matt Kemp, but managed to take his major league-leading 38th save home as the Brewers extended their National League Central Division margin to three games.  Kershaw went the distance, allowing just five hits – but two of them left the park.  Ryan Braun hit his 15th homer in the fourth inning.  Carlos Gomez belted number-19 in the sixth.  The loss ended an 11-game winning streak for Kershaw.  Wily Peralta goes for Milwaukee today.  The Dodgers will answer with veteran Dan Haren.

When leader Matt Crafton made a pit stop with three laps to go, that was the opening Necedah’s Johnny Sauter needed to take the lead at the Camping World Truck Series Careers for Veterans 200 in Michigan.  Sauter went on to win.  He is nine points ahead of Crafton in the standings after that victory. Janesville’s Travis Kvapil finished 20th.

Injuries to Chikwe Obasih and Alec James have Wisconsin coaches scrambling to find a back-up for defensive lineman Warren Herring.  The Badgers are less than two weeks from the season-opener against LSU.  Redshirt sophomore Arthur Goldberg may have developed enough the 6-3, 290-pounder can give Herring a breather from time-to-time.  Redshirt junior Devin Gaulden is shaping up as the number-three cornerback and it looks like freshman Lubern Figaro will start at safety.

Nick Watney holds a one-shot lead entering today’s final round at the Wyndham Championships in North Carolina.  Watney is 14-under-par.  Brad Fritsch is in second by himself.  Pewaukee’s Mark Wilson is 14 shots off the pace at even par.  Wilson is tied for 67th.
