The Ellsworth Hubbers came into the week walking a fine line between being in the playoffs or missing the playoffs.
The Hubbers lost, 8-1, to Spring Valley on July 19 in a St. Croix Valley Baseball League makeup game from June 28.
Ellsworth, which has relied on steady defensive play to keep it in low-scoring ball games, couldn’t overcome slick conditions and gave up the lead early on.
The Hawks scored two runs in the first inning, aided by an error and a wild throw on what has been a routine double play for the Hubbers in the past. Spring Valley plated two more runs in the third inning and four runs in the fifth inning.
Ellsworth scored its run in the bottom of the second inning.
Lefty Matt Brandeen was credited with the win and Darren Georgakas was the losing pitcher.
The Hubbers returned to action July 22 and were handed an 8-0 loss by Elmwood.
Elmwood pitcher Chad Fox went eight innings and only gave up two hits. Fox struck out seven batters.
Mike Blizel was 4-for-5 with a double to lead the Expos’ attack.
Mitch Johnson was charged with the loss for the Hubbers.
Elmwood leadoff hitter Adam Churchill was 1-for-4 with a grand slam in the seventh inning.
Ellsworth dropped a 4-2 decision to Osceola on July 23.
