"We had our ups and downs," head coach Jordan Poirier said of his Prescott wrestling team's performance at Ellsworth's 54th Annual Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 2. "At one point we were in second place, had one bad round, but finished up strong."
The Cardinals finished fifth out of 12 teams at the invite with 118.5 points, just four points shy of fourth-place Medford.
"Overall, it was a good day," Poirier said.
One of Prescott's "ups" came from sophomore 182-pound wrestler Joe Schulte who won his weight class after pinning the 20-8 Tony Carlson of Unity two minutes and 39 seconds into the championship match.
"That's a big win for him," Poirier said. "He had a good day."
Schulte said he was more nervous for his second-round match against Ellsworth's Connor Ekholm than he was to face Carlson. Schulte was able to move onto the first-place match after pinning Ekholm at 3:16.
Early in his match against Carlson, Schulte said he was just trying to not get tossed by his senior opponent.
"I almost got tossed, and I got scared," Schulte said, "but I just took him down, and it worked out in my favor."
The sophomore wrestler had few words to describe the feeling of claiming his first title at the Ellsworth Invite.
"It's more than words," Schulte said. "It's a really cool feeling."
Ethan Tulip, who qualified for state last year and was seeded first in the 113-pound weight class, also claimed his class after receiving a bye in the first round, beating Huntar Kruckeberg of Cadott by a 15-2 major decision, and taking a 4-2 decision over Ellsworth's Carter Huppert in the championship.
Tulip would have preferred to have a match in the first round over the bye.
"I got bored sitting up there just watching for four hours," Tulip said.
"I knew I had to stay focused," Tulip said of his championship match. The senior wrestler said he started off slow in the first period, but was pleased with his second and third periods.
Ty Sanford, who placed fourth at state for the Cardinals in the 2016-17 season, finished in third place in the 195-pound weight class after losing to Dover-Eyota's Mike Nelson in a second-round 9-4 decision.
"Ty had a rough match," Poirier said of Sanford's second match of the day, "but he's got to learn from it."
Sanford went on to pin Nick Hofacker of Spring Valley/Elmwood in the third-place match.
"December and January is just practice, and when we get to February ... that's when it's the real deal," he said.
The Cardinals continue their season on Thursday, Dec. 7 at Somerset.
