Sixteen Pierce County wrestlers advance to sectionals, Ellsworth as team

Pierce County will send 16 prep wrestlers and one team to next week's sectional meets.

All these wrestlers qualified in WIAA regional meets held Saturday afternoon.

No. 3 ranked Ellsworth will have the biggest contingent with nine qualifiers from the Division 2 West Salem-Bangor Regional. Seven of those are regional champions starting with Sam Huppert at 103 pounds, D.J. Yarwood at 112; Chace Kinneman won at 119; team captain Hayden Hauschildt won the 130-pound title; Jordan Zimmer took first at 152; Shawn Helmueller, wrestling in his first meet of the season after recovering from knee injuries, won first at 160 and Alex Hoyer struck gold at 215.

The remaining two sectional qualifiers will go as second place finishers. They are Dane Solyntjes at 125 and Jordon Borst at 171.

Ellsworth won the team title comfortably with 260.5 points. Seven teams competed in the regional meet and the first place team competes in Tuesday's team sectional in Amery. Ellsworth will take on Neillsville in one semifinal and the host Warriors will compete against Barron in the other semi.

Prescott competed in the same regional as Ellsworth and finished fifth. They will have three qualifers led by champions Jake Filkins at 189 and John Kariesch at 285 to go with runner-up Aaron Gilles at 160.

Over at the Division 3 regional in nearby Whitehall, Spring Valley-Elmwood placed third with 149 points. The Redbirds had two regional champions in Justin Keenlyne at 103 and Trent Larrieu at 160. Also qualifying for SVE were Willie Coyne at 135 and Cory Lasure at 215.

The Division 2 individual sectional is at Somerset next Saturday while the Division 3 meet is at UW-Eau Claire.
