Blues head to Hudson for SCVL opener

It won't be the same for the Plum City Blues not having the familiar glove of Gordy Luebker in the field, nor his bat in the line-up. Luebker has been recovering from an accident on his farm that took place last November.

The important thing to remember is Luebker is back home in Plum City recovering nicely and the Blues will carry on in his sprit for the 2008 season, which will begin for them this Sunday.

The Blues lead off this year's St. Croix Valley League schedule this Sunday when they take on Hudson at Hudson. The first pitch will be at 1 p.m.

This will be the only league game of the weekend with the remaining teams beginning the weekend of May 1-3.

Last year the Blues won their final two games in the final week of league play to go 7-6, but that wasn't good enough to make the Wisconsin Baseball Association playoffs (WBA). They hope to change that situation if not topple Prescott from atop their perch on the South Division.

The Pirates were division champs with a 10-3 record and made the playoffs along with the WBA State Tournament. Ellsworth was right behind them at 8-5 with Bay City at 4-9 and Elmwood 2-11

Menomonie won the North Division title with an 8-4 mark. Hudson and Osceola both were a half-game behind the Eagles but all three teams made the playoffs. New Richmond was 5-8 and Spring Valley 4-8.

This season will be the first in the SCVL for St. Croix Falls and River Falls.

St. Croix Falls joined the league back in January, moving in from a Minnesota league, and will be in the North Division. They will play all the teams in their division twice and all the teams in the South Division once, making for an uneven schedule.

The River Falls Flying Fish is the new name and location of the old Spring Valley Hawks team. They will play their games at River Falls High School and be in the North Division as well.

The four regional sites for the WBA playoffs have been announced. They are Osceola, Haugen, Osseo and Rib Lake. The regional games will take place Aug. 8-10. The state tournament will be in Ashland during the weekend of Aug. 15-17.

Local team tournaments for this year are Plum City's Memorial Weekend Tournament May 24-26, The New Richmond tournament June 13-15 and Ellsworth's Cheese Curd Festival Tournament June 27-29.

Plum City not only will begin the SCVL season but end it as well. The final day of league competition is July 27 and the following weekend on Aug. 2 will be the Gordy Luebker Benefit Games at Legion Park with the proceeds going towards Luebker's medical treatment.
