Prep golf season gets underway

Despite poor weather conditions, area golf courses were playable enough for Pierce County's prep golf teams last week.

Ellsworth was able to catch up in its Middle Border Conference schedule by playing two make-up meets in Osceola along with a scheduled meet Friday in Somerset. Prescott's first meet also took place Friday at Hammond hosted by St. Croix Central.

Busy as a Panther

The Panthers' first meet took place April 14 at Krooked Kreek. EHS placed third, shooting a nine-hole 186. The host Chieftans won the six-team meet with a score of 170 followed by St. Croix Central's 179. Durand shot a 187, Baldwin-Woodville a 198 and Colfax was sixth with a score of 221.

Osceola's Cole Johnson was the meet medalist, shooting a 38.

Ellsworth's Aaron Nelson finished in the top 10 individually, shooting a 41 in his first varsity meet in two years. Teammates Adam Henning shot a 47, Caleb Peterson, 48, Nate Murphy 50 and Isaac Kauffman 51. (E-Town lowered their score Thursday to a 175 but that couldn't place them any higher than third in a three-team MBC meet with host Osceola and New Richmond. The Tigers shot a 156 to win and the Chiefs' score was 172. Johnson was again a meet medalist with a score of 37 despite the wind and rain.

Murphy had the lowest EHS score with a 41 followed by Nelson's 42, Peterson's 43, a 49 for Kauffman and a 50 for Henning.

At Somerset's Bristol Ridge the Panthers were second with a 187. The host Spartans won the meet with a score of 175 and Mondovi shot a 213.

Nelson was in a three-way tie for medalist honors by shooting a 43. Along with him were Somerset's Chad Kobs and Eric Schluesner.

The rest of EHS' scores were Murphy 46, Henning 48, Peterson 50 and Kauffman 53.

First stirrings

On a rainy Friday afternoon, Prescott played in its first meet at the Hammond Golf Course. Central won the three team MBC meet with a score of 182. Osceola was next with a 185 and Prescott shot a 209. Central's Colin Breuswitz won the meet medalist award with a score of 42.

Brian Panek had PHS' lowest score with a 49 followed by John Kareisch's 50, a 54 by Vince Achtenberg, 56 by Jake Plante and a 57 by Zach Simones.

Both Prescott and Ellsworth played in three team league meets Monday. They'll be together Thursday at Durand's Rolling Greens Golf Course for a full conference meet. On Friday Ellsworth will play in the Bloomer Invitational.
