Pirates, Hubbers winners in first round of WBA playoffs

The Prescott Pirates and Ellsworth Hubbers both advanced to the regional finals of the Wisconsin Baseball Association playoffs.

Both teams won their respective first round games Saturday afternoon, Prescott in Osceola and Ellsworth in Altoona.

The Hubbers downed Rib Lake 11-5. They will take on Brill with the first pitch at 3 p.m. this afternoon at the regional in Altoona.

The Pirates just edged Onalaska 2-1 at Oakey Park in Osceola. A controversial double play call on an botched infield fly had Pirate players hopping mad after umpires made the decision which cost Prescott two base runners with no outs in the top of the ninth. But pitcher Adam Barta got the save as he gave up just one hit Onalaska's final at bat.

"He's got a heart of gold and pitches like a bulldog in that situation," Prescott player/manager Brady Randolph said. "It was a tough spot to be in and we didn't do him any favors on offense but he got the job done."

Prescott stranded 14 base runners in the game.  Their runs came in the first as Billy Brookshaw scored on Brady Powell's RBI-single. Then in the seventh Jim French slid into home plate after Brian Johnson's RBI-single. French hit a double and Jake Kruschke also had a hit for Prescott. Starting pitcher Mark Moriarity got the win.

Prescott will play Hallie this afternoon at 3 p.m. Hallie edged Hudson in 10 innings yesterday 5-2. In other first round games involving SCVL teams, River Falls edged Jim Falls 5-4; Menomonie defeated Chippewa Falls 6-2 and New Richmond edged Everest 4-2.
