Augsburg College wrestling team gears up for Midlands Invitational

MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 2 ranked Augsburg College wrestling team, coached by Ellsworth native Mark Matzek, will compete in the prestigious Midlands Invitational meet Dec. 29-30 in Evanston, Ill. at Northwestern University’s Welsh-Ryan Arena.

At the midway point of the season the Auggies have a 2-0 record in dual meets, having defeated Waldorf College of Iowa 44-9 and Minnesota State-Moorhead 34-9. They’ve also competed in several open invitational meets hosted by MSU-Moorhead and St. Cloud State along with their season-opening Auggie –Brute Open.

Augsburg had two team champions at the Dragon Open in Moorhead (Chad Johnson at heavyweight and Matt Heschel at 197 pounds) and three champs at the Husky Open in St. Cloud (Johnson, Heschel and Mike Fuenffinger at 125). Johnson, a two-time NCAA Division III champion, won the meet MVP award at St. Cloud and all three are ranked in the top three of their respective weight classes. Fuenffinger and Johnson are considered contenders in their weight classes for the Midlands meet and will be seeded.

Ellsworth’s Roarke Langer is in his sophomore season wrestling in the Augsburg program.  So far Langer is 5-6 this season at 133 pounds (23-17 in two seasons) with two major decision wins, a tech. fall and a pin. He finished fourth in the recent Dick Walker Invitational held at Wartburg College in Iowa. Back on Dec . 14.

After Midlands, the Auggies’ next meet is on Jan. 5 against St. Olaf in Northfield, Minn. beginning at 7 p.m. Augsburg  will next wrestle at home in Si Melby Hall on Jan. 24 against Augustana College, which also begins at 7 p.m. They will also have home meet on Feb. 21 against UW-Stevens Point and will host the NCAA Division III West Regional on March 1, which begins at 9 a.m.  This year’s Division III national meet will be in Cedar Rapids, Iowa at the U.S. Cellular Center March 14-15.
