Prescott, Ellsworth advance in WBA Tournament

Both Prescott and Ellsworth will be playing for berths in the Wisconsin Baseball Association state tournament today as both Pierce County amateur baseball teams won their regional semifinal contests Saturday.

Ellsworth just got past Sparta 3-2 in 12 innings at the regional in Hallie while Prescott also eked out a win, 2-1 over Merrill at the regional at River Falls's First National Bank Park.

Prescott used an eight-strikeout, three-hit pitching effort from winner Erik Monson along with solid defense to offset a recent lack of offense. Prescott had six hits led by Travis Nubeck's two doubles, one of which scored a run. Nick Johnson hit an RBI-single to score the Pirates' other run. Both Johnson and fellow outfielder Alex Ross made two running catches to hold up the Pirates' defense along with a 6-4-3 double play in the second inning.

Prescott will play Onalaska, which won its regional semifinal game 11-4 over Osseo. Ellsworth takes on Whitehall, which downed Hudson 3-2. Both regional semifinal games are at 3 p.m.

Other SCVL results from Saturday had Menomonie winning 7-3 over Duluth and Osceola falling to Everest. Both games were in Haugen.

River Falls will look to make the state tournament, which will be played at First National Bank Park next weekend. The Fighting Fish take on Eau Claire today in River Falls with the first pitch at noon. 

Other WBA Tournament results from Saturday had Spooner defeating Wausau 14-2, Ashland Merchants defeating Interwald 8-3, Whittelesey defeating Cumberland 6-4 and La Crescent, Minn. blanking Beef River 10-0.
