On to state for Pirates, Hubbers

The Ellsworth Hubbers and Prescott Pirates will compete in the 66th Wisconsin Baseball Association (WBA) State Tournament this weekend.

The Hubbers advanced from the Hallie regional by outlasting Whitehall 7-6 in 15 innings Sunday while Prescott downed Onalaska 6-2 in the River Falls Regional on Sunday as well.

Sean Corey belted a solo home run for the winning score against Whitehall. Mitch Johnson came in to pitch in 14th inning to get the win. Ellsworth rallied from a 5-3 deficit to tie the game in the eighth.

The Pirates took on Onalaska for the state tournament berth Sunday. Ross started up the Pirates’ punch right away with a lead-off double, scoring  on an RBI-single to center by Johnson.  An RBI-single by Ross put Prescott up 2-0 then Ross plated again, faking out the catcher to reach home plate after a double by Johnson. Onalaska cut the lead to 3-2 but Prescott put the game away in the eighth with a three-run blast by Nubeck. Pitcher Adam Barta got the win and rightfielder Mike Lytle recorded nine catches in right, two of them preventing runs from scoring.

Ellsworth will take on Chaseburg-Coon Valley in the quarterfinals Friday evening in Ellsworth at Summit Park starting at 7:30 p.m.. Prescott's quarterfinal game is also on Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. against River Falls at First National Bank Park in River Falls.

The tournament semifinals and finals will take place in River Falls. The championship game is next Sunday at noon.
