Spring Valley, EPC lose to ranked teams
Spring Valley and Elmwood/Plum City prep football teams were both beaten by top-ranked opponents in their respective season finales Friday.
Valley was just edged out by No. 4 ranked Glenwood City 30-29 at Williams Stadium in Menomonie while EPC lost 42-13 to No. 5 Alma/Pepin at Pepin. Both GC and A/P are Division 7 squads.
Glenwood City's Jeff Kopacz scored the winning touchdown with :39 seconds to go on a three-yard run. Kopacz rushed for 100 yards and caught two passes for 67 yards. Isacc Tuttle scored the winnign two-point conversion on a run.
Valley outgained GC on the ground 212-204 led by Tyler O'Keefe's 108 yards and Zach Newton's 80 yards. Passing stats were almost even as GC quarterback Nick Mrdutt threw for 168 yards while Newton threw for 104 yards. Remington Schneider caught a 66 yard TD pass from Newton and Newton also threw TD passes of 17 yards to James Hannack and 20 yards to Jed Schlegel. Mrdutt had TD passes of 54 yards to Kopacz and 66 yards to Tuttle, who was held well below his usual 100 yard-plus ground game by the SV defense.
SV led 14-0 but the Hilltoppers (8-1, 5-1) but GC took a 16-14 lead at halftime thanks to two TD plus two Nick Mrdutt runs for two-point PATs. Both teams traded TDs in the second half with Glenwood scoring as they had the ball for the final minute. Cardinal kicker Bryan Bednarek made all his extra points and O'Keefe scored on a two-point conversion as well.
Spring Valley finishes 6-3 overall (3-3 in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference) all three losses close ones to Colfax, Mondovi and Glenwood City.
EPC was finally eliminated from playoff contention in their loss to Alma/Pepin. The unbeaten Eagles were well in front at halftime 35-6 and rushed for nearly 300 yards while holding the Wolves to just 76 yards rushing. A/P running back Aikan Major rushed for 137 yards and four TDs.
EPC (3-6, 2-4) quarterback Levi Wolf led the team in rushing with 45 yards on nine carries and he threw for 161 yards on 11-of-18 passing. EPC wide receiver Alex Boyer caught seven passes for 100 yards, including a 15-yard TD pass late in the ballgame.
