Cardinal hoop teams conquer foes

Spring Valley's Joe Helmer (23) battles for a rebound underneath the basket against Cameron.2 / 2

The Cardinals of the Eau Galle and the Cardinals of the St. Croix were both winners on the hardwood last Tuesday evening.

Spring Valley crushed Cameron 67-44 while Prescott beat Amery 56-46. Also in action Tuesday evening, Elmwood lost at Alma/Pepin 59-55.

Spring Valley finally got its season underway last week after their first schedule game vs. Glenwood City was moved to Dec. 9.  Valley scored 21 points in the first quarter on their home floor in a non-conference contest with the Comets and led at halftime 34-23. SV expanded its lead in the second half, outscoring Cameron 33-21.

It was Zac Webster who did much of the expanding as he finished with a game-high 27 points, including a dunk in the first half and four made trifectas. One of those three-pointers came at the halftime buzzer.

Balanced scoring helped Prescott bounce back from a 50-47 loss at Elk Mound 24 hours later with a Middle Border Conference opening win over Amery by 10 points. PHS had three players in double figures led by Charlie Tayson’s 14 points followed by 12 from Mike Brookshaw and 10 points by Clay Seifert.
