Spring Valley/Elmwood wrestlers ranked No. 1 state (first PCH wrestling honor roll)

Tyler Berg is one of the starters for the No.1 ranked Spring Valley/Elmwood wrestling team.

For the first the Spring Valley/Elmwood wrestling co-op program has reached the top of the state high school wrestling polls.

Both in Crossface Magazine and on Wisconsin Wrestling Online, The Redbird program is ranked No. 1 in Division 3.

SVE is 6-0 overall in dual meets ad is fresh off of winning the top pool at the Dells Duals Classic last weekend. Tonight the Redbirds will take on Clear Lake in a rematch of the team sectional finals in Spring Valley. The meet begins at 7 p.m.

Clear Lake is ranked No. 10 in Division 3 in the Crossface poll and honorable mention in the Wisconsin Wrestling Online poll.

Also wrestling tonight is the Middle Border Conference and its schedule has Pierce County teams Prescott and Ellsworth in action. The Cardinals host Baldwin-Woodville and the Panthers are at New Richmond.

Ellsworth is ranked No. 2 in the Wisconsin Wrestling Online poll and No. 3 in Crossface's poll.

EHS was also in action last weekend, taking second in a Minnesota tournament to defending Minnesota Class AA champion Kasson-Mantorville. The KoMets are ranked No. 3 in AA currently.

Ellsworth, 5-1 overall, will hold out 170-pounder Logan Kemmerer from tonight’s meet due to an knee injury he suffered at the tournament but New Richmond is even worse shape. Several of its starters were hurt at Dells Duals Classic, including the Tigers’ top wrestler Shane Blackman, and will not wrestle against EHS. NR went 2-3 in its pool in the Dells meet after the injuries took place.

Aside from health, Ellsworth head coach Chad Steldt hopes to see more intensity from the team as the season develops.

“From a technical standpoint we wrestled fine last week but we need to be more intense,” Steldt said. “When we turn wrestles over to pin them we need to do so but that will come in time. It’s still a long season.”

Steldt says he still plans to move a few wrestlers around in the line-up for this week’s dual but the team EHS puts out for Bi-State and Cheesehead will what competes for the Panthers come February.

“It’s nice to have the depth where you can be flexible with your line-up and give kids a chance to wrestle varsity and see what weight classes are good fit for other wrestlers,” Steldt said. “But I would like us to settle into a set line-up by early January so it becomes a cohesive unit. We really didn’t do that last year given our injury situation until February and by then it was too late. We our team set a lot earlier so we can go forward from there.”

After this week's action Pierce County's wrestling teams will get ready for big holiday week tournament competition. Ellsworth will be at the Bi-State Classic in La Crosse and Prescott and SVE will be at the Northern Badger Tournament in River Falls.
