SVE wrestlers well on their way to winning Northern Badger

RIVER FALLS - No. 1 ranked Spring Valley/Elmwood is well on their way to winning the Northern Badger prep wrestling tournament.

After the first day of competition at River Falls High School Friday, the Redbirds have over 200 points already, well in front of their nearest rival, Boyceville, which has 170 points. SVE leads in both the overall meet and in Division 2.

Winning quarterfinal matches last evening for SVE were Derek Huebel at 113 pounds (4-0 over Mondovi's Blair Larson); Cruze Hulburt at 120 (4-2 over Johnson Creek's Adam Becker); Tyler Berg at 126 (4-2 over Prescott's Paul Hansen); Jed Schlegel at 145 (3-1 over Flambeau's Jarod Bainter); and Ethan Hofacker at 195 (3-1 over Flambeau's Zach Lund). They will be competing in semifinal matches this morning.

SVE also has six other wrestlers still active in the wrestlebacks: Andrew Webb at 106; Logan Newton at 132; Zach Newton at 138; Trent Miller at 152; Kevin Fesenmaier at 170 and D.J. Wheeler at 285.

Prescott is currently sixth in Division 2 with 78 points. Alex Stuhl made it to the semifinals after winning his quarterfinal match 5-2 at 132 pounds over Jeremy Peterson of Osseo-Fairchild/Altoona/Augusta/Fall Creek co-op.

Still alive in the wrestlebacks are Sam Hoopingarner at 106; Hansen at 126; Nick Opdahl at 138; Troy Urman at 152; and Tyler Miller at 182.
