Prescott High School's boys' basketball team was able to get out of Ellsworth with its perfect Middle Border Conference record intact as PHS downed Ellsworth High School 37-35 Tuesday evening.

Trailing 22-19 at halftime, Prescott outscored Ellsworth 12-7 in the third quarter to take 31-29 lead going into the final quarter. Ellsworth led again, 33-31 with 2:54 to go but it would be the last advantage they enjoyed. A pair of free-throws by Alex Helmer plus a basket by Helmer tied the score at 35-35 with a minute to go. Helmer then hit another two free-throws to put the Cardinals ahead 37-35.

The home-team Panthers had one final chance but Prescott chewed-up much of the :21 seconds by committing fouls which they had plenty to give. Ellsworth could only attempt its final shot with 2.4 seconds remaining and no shot was take as a turnover ended the ballgame.

"In a game like this where there are not a lot of points or points per possession, every good decision you make, every rebound you get (PHS had 11 rebounds on offense) is magnified in importance," PHS head coach Nick Johnson said. "We were fortunate to have a good share of rebounds and good decisions to win the game."

Prescott led 10-2 to start the game but Ellsworth used three-pointers by Chrystian Kulow, Emery Whalen and Evan Klawitter to  go ahead 18-11 midway through the second quarter.

Chrystian Kulow and Kyle Murphy each had eight points to lead Ellsworth in scoring.  Marty Harris finished with nine points and Clay Seifert had eight for PHS. Helmer finished with six points, all in the final two minutes.

The Cards' improve to 13-2 overall and 8-0 in the MBC. The Purple drop to 6-5 overall and 5-2 in the league. Prescott is at Baldwin-Woodville Thursday while Ellsworth hosts New Richmond Friday.
