Busy weekend of high school hoops on tap

A busy weekend of high school hoops' is on tap among Pierce County teams.

Eleven games will be played over the next 72 hours, both regularly scheduled and make-up contest with big implications for conference titles and the upcoming regional tournaments.

Ellsworth High School's boys basketball team still has a shot at a share of the Middle Border Conference title, although it will require an almost inside straight to so. After losing 56-48 to Prescott Tuesday, the Panthers will have to win twice and the Cardinals and Somerset, both tied for first in the MBC, will have to lose their final two ballgames too. EHS can at least try its luck starting with Friday's ballgame at home vs. Somerset. This will be Ellsworth's final regular season home game.

However, if Ellsworth wins and Prescott wins at Durand Friday, the Cardinals will clinch their first-ever MBC title in school history.

Also in boys' action this weekend, county Dunn-St. Croix Conference rivals Spring Valley and Plum City will clash Thursday in Plum City. The Blue Devils will slook to snap a seven-game losing streak but will have to do so against a 13-5 Cardinal squad looking for another win to improve its playoff position. Seeding meeting for boys' regional tournament are this weekend as well. SV's Zac Webster is second in the D-SC in scoring at 17.3 points per game.

Ellsworth hosts Prescott with the Panthers looking for their first league win this season while PHS wants to go over the .500 mark for the first time this season. The Cardinals have the county's best record among girls' hoops teams at 9-9. EHS's Kelsey Betthauser is second in the league in scoring at 19.3 ppg.

There will be Dunn-St. Croix action for all three days this weekend. Thursday's games have Elmwood traveling to No. 2 ranked Colfax while Boyceville is at Spring Valley.
