Three county boys' hoops teams already in regional semifinals

Only two Pierce County prep boys’ basketball teams will be engaged in first round, WIAA regional tournament games next Tuesday.

Three teams: Prescott, Ellsworth and Spring Valley will have first-round byes and not play until Friday of that week. On top of that fact, all three teams will host regional semifinal games.

Prescott is the No. 2 seed of its Division 3 semi-sectional (sectional semifinal is in New Richmond on March 6), which is a part of the whole Eau Claire North Sectional. The Cardinals, (17-3 overall), will face either No. 7 seeded Amery (9-11) or No. 10 seeded Osceola (5-13) Friday in Prescott.

Ellsworth (11-7) is the No. 4 seed of the same D-3 sectional tournament half-bracket. Their regional semifinal opponent will either be No. 5 Maple Northwestern (13-5) or No. 12 St. Croix Central (3-15).

The other top two seeds in this half-bracket are No. 1 Somerset (17-2) and No. 3 Barron (16-5).

In Division 4, Spring Valley (14-5) has the No. 2 seed in its regional tournament bracket of the New Richmond Sectional. The Cardinals will take on either No. 6 seeded Boyceville (5-15) or No. 3  Eau Claire Regis (13-8). Mondovi (15-5) got the No. 1 seed in the regional.

The county’s two Division 5 teams will both be in action next Tuesday. Elmwood (2-18) is the No. 8 seed in its regional tournament of the La Crosse Logan Sectional. They will be at No. 1 seeded Gilmanton (15-3). Plum City (6-12) is the No. 6 seed and will be on the road as well as they are at No.  3 seed Cochrane-Fountain City (14-7).

An Elmwood win would mean the Raiders would play either No. 4 Alma/Pepin (11-7) or No. 5 Alma Center Lincoln (8-9).  A PC win would mean facing either No. 2 Eleva-Strum (13-7) or No. 7 seeded Independence (3-17) in Friday’s regional semifinals.

The championship games for all these regional will be on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the lower seed’s home gym.
