Spring Valley/Elmwood wrestling team back to state after winning team sectional

BOYCEVILLE - No.1 ranked Spring Valley/Elmwood to its second berth in the WIAA Team Wrestling State Tournament in three years after winning the Division 3 Boyceville Sectional Tuesday evening.

SV/Elmwood defeated No. 9 Cumberland 51-18 in the semifinals and Phillips 69-6 in the finals.

The Redbirds only led Cumberland 16-15 after the heavyweight match (the meet began at 160) but won seven of the next eight matches. Trent Miller started the meet off with 1:12 pinfall. Other pinfalls went to Ethan Hofacker at 195, Andrew Webb at 106; Cruze Hurlburt at 120 in :43 seconds; Tyler Berg at 126 and Jed Schlegel at 152. Also winning for SVE were Kevin Fesenmaier at 170; Derek Hubel at 113 with a tech. fall; Ryan Berg and Zach Newton.

Phillips won a dramatic sectional semifinal win over La Crosse Aquinas 37-36 which the Loggers won in the very match by a single point. But there were no dramatics in sectional finals as SV/Elmwood won 13 of 14 matches with pins going to Hofacker in :25 seconds; Mike Roesler at 220; D.J Wheeler at heavyweight; Webb in :30 seconds; Hurlburt again, Tyler Berg, Zach Newton, and Quniton Elliott at 160.

SVE will face No. 10 Riverdale in the team state semifinals March 8 beginning at 10 a.m. No. 2 Coleman and No. 3 Random Lake will square off in the other semifinals.
