MADISON - After a disappointing quarterfinal round, the Spring Valley/Elmwood wrestling team salvaged at least three more place winners to go with Zach Newton, who was the lone Spring Valley/Elmwood wrestler to win his quarterfinal match Friday.

Newton, 39-7 overall, defeated Coleman's Trevor Seewald (42-3) in overtime 3-1 at 145 pounds. Newton trailed Seewald 1-0 and look as though he would be ridden out in the final period. But a stalling call with :03 seconds to go tied the match at 1-1 and Newton struck for the takedown in the extra period.

"I knew he was tired, he wasn't doing anything when he got called for stalling," Newton said. "I just kept pushing him and getting him more fatigued until I saw my opening and went for the shot."

SVE head coach Carter Turner said Newton's experience was important factor in his win and for why SVE struggled the rest of the day.

"Experience here makes a big difference," Turner said. "Zach was so poised out there and he beat a wrestler who placed high here last year.  I think once out other wrestlers adjusted to this setting, they wrestled better in the consolation round."

Making the adjustment to the big stage at the Kohl Center in the consolation round was Redbird wrestler Cruze Hurlburt at 120 pounds. He lost 10-7 to Oconto's Elton Kelsey (38-4) after giving up a five-point throw in the first period and seeing his comeback attempt in the third, after a three-point nearfall, fall short. Hurlburt (42-2) came back to win by 10-1 major decision over Luke Meihack (25-16) of Winnebago Lutheran.

Tyler Berg also bounced back after a tough quarterfinal loss at 126. He gave up a three-point nearfall in the third period against Stratford's Alex Heiden (40-5) and lost 5-3. But Berg (42-5) beat Mineral Point's Frank Baker in the consolation round 7-1 to move on to the placing matches Saturday morning and afternoon.

Likewise, SVE's Ethan Hofacker (42-4) bounced back from an 11-4 loss to Random Lake's Nick Klein (39-10) at 195 in the quarterfinals by notching a 5-1 win over Mineral Point's Nate Cody (24-19).

SVE's Jed Schlegel (37-7) lost both of his 152-pound matches today and was ousted from the tournament field. He was shutout 7-0 by Lancaster's Trenton Cornell (43-2) in the quarterfinals and then lost a heartbreaking 1-0 match to Bonduel's Dan Tauchen (39-8) when he was unable to get a reversal and nearfall points in the last :50 seconds just inches away from doing so. Also out of the tourney for SV/Elmwood is Kevin Fesenmaier (38-12). He was pinned by Lancaster's Ethan Soderstrom (21-3) in 1:33 in the quarterfinals and then was beaten by D-SC rival Isaac Tuttle (34-9) of Glenwood City in the consolation round 7-3.

Newton will wrestle this evening at 7 p.m. against Lomira's Casey Steltrecht (44-3).
