Ellsworth teen: Boxing saved my life

Nicholas Christiansen was caught up in the gang life of the Twin Cities staring at a bleak future.

The ray of light came when he was introduced to the sport of boxing.

"It got me out of trouble," he said. "It taught me self-discipline plus being in shape makes you feel good about yourself."

Christiansen has trained for the last year out of the Hastings (Minn.) Boxing Academy. Next month, the 16-year-old Ellsworth native will find himself in a spot he never thought possible when he was in the gang world: competing in the World Ringside Boxing Tournament, Aug. 4-8, in Kansas City, Mo.

"I'll be going up against boxers from Germany, Nigeria, Mexico, Australia and Great Britain, so, yeah, there are some nerves," he said.
