DNR asking bear hunters to provide portion of rib for study

Black bears are making themselves at home across the region.

The Wisconsin state DNR is asking bear hunters to provide sections of ribs from the animals they kill this fall.

Officials say the ribs will help the DNR estimate the state's black bear population - especially in the primary areas of northern and central Wisconsin.

The ribs will be analyzed for tetra-cycline, a compound that was included in bait piles this spring in 32 counties. That data will be fed into the agency's population models.
