The St. Croix River Association will hold its annual Spring Gathering on May 14. Guest speaker will be local distinguished author, William Souder, who will share highlights of his new biography, "On a Farther Shore: the Life and Legacy of Rachel Carson."

Published 50 years ago, Rachel Carson's seminal book, "Silent Spring," changed the way we think about the environment and our place in it. Her book became one of the foundational documents of the environmental movement.

Souder's presentation will explore the life and impact of this remarkable writer, including her influences and the historical context that shaped her work. Souder is the author of two previous books including "A Plague of Frogs" and "Under a Wild Sky," a biography of John James Audubon that was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.

In addition to Souder's program, the Spring Gathering, held at Camp St. Croix in Hudson, will feature displays of projects and issues of the St. Croix River Association, their annual Stewardship Award and a family style dinner. Members of the association will have their annual meeting prior to the Spring Gathering.
