WIAA wrestling: Stuhl, Kosnopfal victorious in prelims

Both Ellsworth wrestlers who competed in the 2018 WIAA Individual State Tournament's preliminary round are headed to the tournament's quarterfinals.

Sophomore Charlie Stuhl faced River Valley's Caleb Radtke on Thursday, Feb. 22, and eliminated the River Valley 120-pounder by a 7-0 decision. Stuhl improves to 33-7 on the season, and will face Lucas Schevikhoven (Sr., 40-0) of Shoreland Lutheran on Friday, Feb. 23 in the quarterfinals.

Cedric Kosnopfal, Ellsworth's 152-pound wrestler, was also successful in his first ever varsity dual at the Kohl Center. Kosnopfal was matched with Wyatt Wenninger of Tomahawk, and eliminated the junior wrestler with a 3-1 overtime win.

With the win, Kosnopfal is now 27-13 overall, and will wrestle Jackson Hauri (Jr., 31-2) of Brodhead/Juda in his first dual on Friday.

Friday's Division 2 quarterfinals are scheduled to begin at 11:15 a.m. at the Kohl Center.

145: Jared Lansing (Jr., 39-5) vs. Matthew Maitland (So., 35-10) of Wrightstown

152: Kosnopfal (Jr., 27-13) vs. Hauri (Jr., 31-2) of Brodhead/Juda

170: Dalton George (Sr., 29-7) vs. Dillon Martin (Sr., 42-4) of Wautoma/Wild Rose

Division 2 team state

It was announced on Thursday that Ellsworth will face Chilton/Hilbert in the semifinals of the WIAA Team State Tournament on Saturday, March 3 at the UW Field House, while Luxemburg-Casco sees Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau in the first round. The winners will advance to the finals, which are scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
