WIAA wrestling: Sanford wins by pin in prelims

Prescott's Ty Sanford (Sr., 34-4) move onto face Marcus Orlandoni (So., 38-6) of North Fond Du Lac/Saint Marys in the 2018 WIAA Individual Wrestling State Tournament on Friday, Feb. 23 after pinning Cameron Caldwell (Sr., 28-9) of Adams-Friendship in the tournament's preliminary round. Ty Sanford began his second go-around at the Kohl Center on Thursday, Feb. 23, but his nerves were still present at his 2018 state tournament appearance.

In fact, they were intensified.

"There were more nerves," Sanford said of this year's state preliminary dual when comparing it to that of his junior season. "Last year, I was an underdog and was just going out there saying, 'Whatever happens, happens.' This year, I'm expected to do well, so there are more nerves."

Despite some uneasiness, Sanford (Sr., 34-4) was still able to come out on top in Thursday's preliminary round. The Prescott senior pinned Cameron Caldwell (Sr., 28-9) of Adams-Friendship in three minutes and 32 seconds to advance to the quarterfinals.

"I just wrestled my match and did what I wanted to do," Sanford said after defeating Caldwell.

Sanford will face North Fond Du Lac/Saint Marys' Marcus Orlandoni (So., 38-6) on Friday, Feb. 23 in the quarterfinals, which are scheduled to begin at 11:15 a.m.
