WIAA wrestling: Semifinals next for Sanford
After two scoreless periods, Prescott’s Ty Sanford came away with a 2-0 quarterfinal win over Marcus Orlandoni of North Fond Du Lac/Saint Marys on Friday, Feb. 23 at the WIAA Individual State Tournament.
Sanford’s first two periods against Orlandoni were evenly matched, but the Prescott senior’s head coach Jordan Poirier said his movement on the bottom in the third period was what made the difference.
“Ty was able to get away and separate his hips and got up and took [Orlandoni] down right away,” Poirier said. “Ty is tough to hammer on top, and he just rode [Orlandoni] the rest of the way.”
Sanford (Sr., 35-4) will wrestle Stephen Ronnfeldt (Sr., 41-9) in the semifinals. Ronnfeldt advanced to the semis after beating Freedom’s Matt Verhasselt by a 3-2 decision in the quarterfinals.
“We’re taking one match at a time,” Poirier said. “We have a big match to get ready for tonight, and we’ll take it from there.”
The Division 2 semifinals are set to begin at 7 p.m. on Friday.
