A group between 20-30 participated in a protest Tuesday morning to save the two oak trees that have stood on the Pierce County Courthouse front lawn for generations. Among the speakers were Eleanor Oltman, Jack Hines and David Culver. Culver has been one of the most passionate speakers among those in saving the trees. The Pierce County Building Committee voted last week to remove the trees as soon as possible.

A report of smoke coming out of the building resulted in the Ellsworth Fire Department being called to a small concrete structure owned by Dean L. Hines on Railroad Avenue in the village, across from the Hofmeister Oil tanks, Saturday at 7:15 p.m. Boxes stacked in the middle of the floor inside were apparently smoldering. The EFD put out the remaining fire and there was no damage to the building. The Ellsworth Police Department also responded.
