SAN FRANCISCO -- When the coughing stops is probably a better sign of when a swine flu patient is no longer contagious, experts said after seeing new research that suggests the virus can still spread many days after a fever goes away. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been telling people to stay home from work and school and avoid contact with others until a day after their fever breaks. It's that time of year again - the sneezing, the wheezing, the dripping, the stuffiness, the chills and the fever. It's that annoying part of life called flu season. Health officials from the Minnesota Department of Health, along with Douglas County Public Health and local healthcare facilities, are stressing the importance of getting a yearly seasonal flu vaccine. Getting vaccinated is being hailed as "the first and most important step in protecting against seasonal flu." Seasonal flu vaccination is especially important for people at high risk of serious flu complications, including young

When one drug leaves, another one almost always replaces it. For instance, methamphetamine, or meth, as it is often referred to, was the drug of choice not that long ago. But the use of meth has since slowed down. "A lot of people were arrested and we were hard on them," said Scot Umlauf, special agent in charge for the West Central Minnesota Narcotics Task Force. "The use of meth in this area has dramatically been reduced." Since the decline in meth, there has been an increase in the use of cocaine.
Hollywood Records pop music sensation and Disney Channel star, Demi Lovato, has partnered with PACER Center's National Center for Bullying Prevention to help champion their anti-bullying movement. With this announcement, Lovato, whose new album "Here We Go Again," skyrocketed to the #1 position on the Billboard album charts one week ago, now has a platform for a cause she cares about deeply. It might be hard to imagine that Demi Lovato was the target of bullying when she was younger, but she was and she now has joined forces with the Minneapolis-based PACER Center.

It's time to roll out several summer reading books, including Lisa Gardner's "The Neighbor" (Bantam, $25). South Boston has always fascinated me, ever since movies like "Good Will Hunting" and "Mystic River." Gardner ("The Killing Hour)" sets her new novel in the world of the "Southie." A housewife, Sandra Jones, from South Boston turns up missing, leaving behind only a four-year-old daughter and her husband, Jason, who seems determined to destroy evidence of his wife's existence. Hastings residents will have to wait a little while longer to find out what the new Highway 61 bridge will look like. At a public meeting Wednesday afternoon at City Hall, transportation officials announced they have two bridge options still in the running. The new bridge will either be the cable-supported design or the arch design. On Tuesday, Minnesota Department of Transportation officials eliminated the twin box girder bridge design from consideration . MnDOT will now put out a request for proposal for both bridge types and see what it receives back from contractors. MnDOT officials m

Both land owners who would be affected by the trail and citizens questioning the source of funding voiced concerns in the basement of the Red Wing Public Library. "This has been troubling for over two years that we've been battling this," Tom Ahern said.
