The Ellsworth Hubbers came into the week walking a fine line between being in the playoffs or missing the playoffs. The Hubbers lost, 8-1, to Spring Valley on July 19 in a St. Croix Valley Baseball League makeup game from June 28. Ellsworth, which has relied on steady defensive play to keep it in low-scoring ball games, couldn’t overcome slick conditions and gave up the lead early on.
Easter egg hunts guaranteed two things last weekend in Pierce County: smiles and sugar. Kids hunted and gathered Easter eggs at the Pierce County Fairgrounds Saturday, April 8 and then again Sunday, April 9 at the Spring Valley Health and Rehab Center. The Ellsworth Funsters hosted the event on Saturday and the Cruz'rs Tri-County Car Collectors Club hosted Sunday's event.
MADISON -- The road to the Resch Center in Green Bay has been set. On Sunday afternoon, WIAA released the tournament brackets for all five prep girls basketball divisions. Prescott will host Spooner and Ellsworth will travel to take on Baldwin-Woodville in Division 3. Spring Valley will host Plum City/Elmwood in Division 4. HAMMOND -- St. Croix Central sophomore Claire Frankiewicz scored 27 points as the Panthers (5-1) defeated the Spring Valley (4-2) in prep girls basketball on Monday night, 59-30. Frankiewicz made five of her seven 3-pointers in the first half. Spring Valley junior Brianna O'Brien scored 10 points to lead the Cardinals. Freshman Sandy Bune added six points. "Tough game," head coach Sean Hoolihan said. "Our girls played hard again, but couldn't get some key buckets to fall early."
BALDWIN -- Logan Benson had 14 points and 18 rebounds for the Ellsworth boys basketball team in their victory over Baldwin-Woodville on Friday night at Baldwin-Woodville High School. Junior Drake Flom led Panthers (1-1, 1-1) scorers with 19 points making all five of his free throws. Flom grabbed eight boards and recorded four assists. Junior Alex Motley scored 17 points making three of his four 3-pointers. Motley also grabbed seven rebounds and had four assists against the Blackhawks (0-1, 0-1).
