Addy Welch’s double in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Joy Schwebach to give Elmwood a 17-16 victory over Colfax in the conference opener for the Raiders Tuesday, April 7. Schwebach started the inning off with a single, her third hit of the game. She advanced to third on a double by Emily Hoyt, setting the stage for Welch’s hit. Hoyt was the other Raider to have three hits. Welch, Shelby Hall and Hannah Feuker had two hits each as Elmwood finished with 13 hits total.

The morning he was scheduled to be on trial for multiple sex crimes, Wade Swenson struck a plea deal. The 44-year-old former Hager City man agreed to plead guilty to second-degree sexual assault of a child, sexual assault of an unconscious victim and capturing image of a nude person -- charges which were from three different incidents. A two-day jury trial was scheduled to be held last Tuesday and Wednesday in Pierce County Circuit Court. A sentencing hearing is set for 1 p.m.

A Minnesota man was uninjured Thursday afternoon when the vehicle he was driving started on fire. James Amland, 55, St. Paul, was driving a silver 2011 Jeep Patriot southbound on US Highway 63 in the town of Trenton when he told Pierce County sheriff's deputies, a wheel off a northbound semi truck came off and landed right between his headlights, according to Chief Deputy Jason Matthys. Amland was uninjured.
