BELDENVILLE--Less than 50 people attended the first Circle K Orchard Apple Festival in 1989. Twenty years later, orchard owner Wilson Mills estimated this year's festival, which will be held this Saturday and Sunday, should draw between 3,000-5,000 people. "It seems like yesterday when we first started it," he explained. "One of the things I think that has caused the growth is the tradition of it.
The ninth annual Emma's Hope, a fundraiser benefiting the children's cancer research fund, will be held at 9 a.m. this Saturday at the Pepin Area Schools. The fundraiser is the brainchild of Shaughn and Angie Laehn, who saw their daughter, Emma, diagnosed with cancer when she was two-years-old. She is now 12. "We wanted to do something to find a cure," said Angie, who teaches at Plum City High School.
When I approached Pierce County Herald Sports Editor Sean Scallon about writing a Vikings column online, he basically said do it whenever you can. Charges were filed earlier this month in Pierce County Circuit Court against a River Falls teenager in relation to the fire at Kinnickinnic State Park in March. Evan R. Bakke, 17, N8041 925th St., was charged with three felonies - arson, burglary, and criminal damage to property. The arson is the most serious of the three as it carries a maximum penalty of $100,000 and/or 40 years prison if Bakke is found guilty. According to the criminal complaint, Sheriff's Investigator Doug Ducklow wrote in his report that he was called to a garage fire at the park, located at 770th Ave.
Aaron Yates' 21st birthday is a day he will like to forget. The River Falls resident started Aug. 27 by having drinks with a few friends at a River Falls bar. By lunchtime, he was sitting in a Pierce County Jail, arrested on charges of sexual assault. A day later, he was officially charged in Pierce County Circuit Court with three counts of third degree sexual assault, a Class G felony bringing a maximum penalty of $25,000 and/or 10 years prison, if found guilty.
A man and a woman who were both charged in Pierce County Circuit Court earlier this year with multiple drug-related charges, including manufacturing methamphetamine in the presence of a child, reached a conclusion in their cases last week. Mark O. Butler, 36, pled guilty to misdemeanor obstructing an officer, while Melissa M. Schlichting, 29, pled guilty to felony possession of methamphetamine.
Wisconsin's junior senator made multiple stops through Pierce County last week. Russ Feingold held a listening session Wednesday morning at the Seyforth Building on the Pierce County Fairgrounds, then made a brief appearance in Prescott to look at a new fire truck for the fire department he helped secured through FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency). An area teenager received probation Tuesday in Pierce County Circuit Court for reckless driving. Travis J. Bacholke, 17, Glenwood City, was placed on one year probation for misdemeanor reckless driving and a deferred prosecution agreement (DPA) for three years for two counts of felony reckless driving to cause great bodily harm. The charges stemmed from an accident Oct. 21, when Bacholke was driving a vehicle on 770th Avenue in the Town of Gilman when three girls--two 14-year-olds and a 15-year-old--decided to ride on the trunk, as it was close to one of their driveways.
A Minnesota man was charged in Pierce County Circuit Court last month with two counts of second degree sexual assault. Joshua B. Plan, 28, Rosemount, is looking at a maximum sentence of $100,000 and/or 40 years prison for each count if found guilty. Pierce County Sheriff's Department was first notified about the alleged sexual assaults on Aug. 16, when the victim's sister reported the case. The sister escorted the victim to the sheriff's department, where the victim was interviewed.
A River Falls teenager was charged last week in Pierce County Circuit Court with alleged felony police battery, and misdemeanors of resisting an officer, criminal damage to property and disorderly conduct. The next court appearance for Keegan D. Enloe, 17, is an 11:30 a.m. preliminary hearing next Tuesday. According to the criminal complaint, River Falls police were dispatched to the power plant at 401 S. Winter St. at 2:54 a.m. Aug. 24 for an individual, later identified as Enloe, banging on the door and being disorderly.
